Advantages: It tastes lovely and can be used in lots of different ways

Disadvantages: If you don't like it then you really will hate it

I am one of the people who love Marmite but I can understand why some people hate it. It is because it has such a very strong taste that people can go either way and I have never met anyone who has said Marmite is OK, it is always that they love or hate it.

The taste is hard to describe I think. It is salty and it has a meat flavour even though it is suitable for vegetarians so no meat products are used to make it. Marmite is a yeast extract and I would agree that there is a taste of yeast and also something else that in 60 years I have never been able to identify. If you are watching your weight then Marmite is very good because it is low in calories and fat and it is a good way of adding some interest into diet food.

MArmite has lots of uses. I have it on toast and sometimes spread thinly on a piece of crusty bread. You will want to spread your Marmite thinly because it is much to strong to have it thick, to get it spread as thinly as you can on your bread try holding your knife under hot water for a few seconds before using it to spread the Marmite. I think this always helps but you don't need to do this is you are putting it on toast because the heat will melt the Marmite a bit so you can spread it better.

I have a dab on Marmite on a baked potato sometimes. I fluff the potato up a bit and put some butter on then when the butter has melted in I put a touch of Marmite on the top and let that go into the potato a little bit.

I also make a very nice cheese toastie using Marmite. I toast 2 slices of bread and then I spread butter and Marmite thinly on the toast and add a thin layer of grated cheese before I put both pieces of toast together. That is a tasty breakfast or lunch.

A spoon full of Marmite stirred into a jug of hot gravy is very tasty as well and I like to add a little bit to my stews because it gives the broth a different meaty flavour. If you heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan and add a spoon of Marmite and let it melt into the oil then you have a very nice flavoured oil to fry bacon in. I like my bacon grilled but sometimes treat myself to it fried in Marmite and oil.

There are lots more uses for Marmite but I think you should experiment because you are sure to find something you like more than my ideas. My grandaughter got a merit award in her cookery class last week because they had to use a storecupboard ingredient in an an unusual way. She added a little bit of Marmite to some biscuit dough and cooked her biscuits as usual, they were lovely because she brought me some over to try.

Marmite comes mainly in glass jars that haven't changed since I first saw Marmite when I was a child. There are 3 or 4 different sizes and I usually buy the small jar because it doesn't take up so much room in my cupboard, this costs about £1.10 I have brought Marmite in a squeezy bottle before as well but it didn't taste the same.

Summary: Add some flavour to your food.

Marmite is restricted to the British Isles, so I don't know it, but from your description I think I can go on living without it. :-)
