Advantages: Vitamin rich tangy spread

Disadvantages: An overpowering yeasty acquired taste

This is one of those foodstuffs that people either love or love to hate. I would say that Marmite is an acquired taste, one that you might hate now, but you'll love it later. Children generally don't like it until they reach late adolescence. As a child I hated it, but when I became a man I loved it. Some people often think it contains beef extract, but they're probably getting it mixed up with beastly Bovril. Marmite only contains vegetable ingredients.

This tasty spread is rich in vitamins, especially the B complex vitamins and contains very little fat. So basically it's good for you (unless you're allergic to yeast) and won't make your bum go big. The taste is rich, slightly tangy and salty. This is not surprising as it is essentially a yeast extract. As you scoop it out from the jar it has the appearance and texture of thick black treacle.

Some people use a spoonful to make gravy or soup stock. But if you're cooking the Marmite you're destroying the vitamins which for me is the main reason for eating it in the first place. I usually have a plate of Marmite on toast with butter on my pink TV dinner table every morning whilst watching the lovely Penny Smith on breakfast TV. If it's a special day I sometimes add a strip or two of melted cheddar. Always spread the Marmite thinly so as not to overpower the other flavours.

Marmite is sold in the rounded bulbous glass jars with bright plastic yellow tops that haven't changed much over the years. There are several sizes, but I would say a small jar costing roughly £1.10 should last one individual a month or so. I have seen Marmite in those awful squeezy bottles but I would never dare touch them. There are also alternatives out there such as Vegemite but for me they will always be second best.

Summary: Traditional tasty spread

I love marmite but it does have the annoying habit of getting everywhere bar the toast.
