Advantages: yummy yummy yummy

Disadvantages: not everyone will like it's very distinctive taste

My husband couldn't believe it when I just told him that I am writing a review on Marmite. The reason for this is that Marmite has been a HUGE part of my life for the last 27 years and he couldn't believe that I hadn't already taken the opportunity to eulogise about it.

The truth of the matter is that I LOVE MARMITE. My idea of the perfect dinner is a big pile of Marmite toast washed down with a cup of tea. Gorgeous...

I'm sure that most people must be aware of Marmite, even if they haven't tasted it, thanks to the 'Love it or hate it' adverts which have been shown on television for many years now. For anybody not familiar with the products, Marmite is a yeast extract which is vegetarian and is usually used as a sandwich filling or on toast. It can also be used to make a hot drink or can be added to stocks or gravy. A little goes a long way, I like a thin smearing of Marmite, any more and the taste can become overwhelming.

I was a very fussy eater when I was little and basically lived on Marmite, butter and bread until I was eight. My Mum used to buy a small Hovis wholemeal loaf for me every day and I would take a packed lunch box full of Marmite sandwiches everywhere I went. I even took them to parties and turned down party food in favour of my Marmite sarnies. I'm sure a psychiatrist would have had a field day with me.

I'm not quite as awkward about my food now but I still do love my Marmite and am really pleased that my boys have inherited my passion. Marmite smeared all over their faces is their idea of heaven.

Ingredients:

Yeast Extract
Salt
Vegetable Extract
Niacin
Thiamin
Spice Extracts
Riboflavin
Floic Acid
Vitamin B12

Marmite contains just 10 kcal in a 4g serving [which is easily enough for a couple of slices of toast]. It contains just a trace of fat per serving and contains 38.7g of protein per 100g. It is, however, quite high in salt [there is 0.5g of salt per 4g serving].

Although Marmite is quite salty, and so should not be consumed in huge quantities, as a vegetarian myself I love the fact that it contains B vitamins and the folic acid which it contains is great for expectant mums.

Marmite is available in several size pots [125g, 250g, 500g and a squeezy tube]. I always buy the biggest pot available [I've yet to find bigger than the 500g jar, which costs about £4.60]. We ran out once and my eldest and I went to the local shop to pick up a jar of Marmite. He burst out laughing at the pitiful little jar that they had on offer and informed the shop assistant that he'd be back tomorrow for another pot!!

Although the big pot is quite expensive it does last for ages.
