Advantages: Tasty, versatile and reasonably priced

Disadvantages: None really, except the squeezy version

It's true what they say about Marmite - you either love it or you hate it. Fortunately, I and my family love it.

Marmite is actually a yeast extract discovered by brewers years and years ago. It is savoury and quite salty tasting. In fact, it was recently put on a list of foods to be avoided in children's diets but the way it was tested was grossly unfair. They used 100 grams of the product and then said it contained too much salt for growing children. I'd love to meet the child who could eat 100 grams of Marmite in one sitting! You only need a tiny amount on a piece of bread-and-butter or toast so the jar lasts for ages.

I don't like the new squeezy bottles, though, and hope they never stop making the jars. The contents of the squeezy version are very runny compared to the original and just didn't feel like proper Marmite. I use a spoon to remove the very last bit from a jar - I hate to waste any.

Marmite is great added to stews and casseroles - I just add a teaspoon to the stock; it really adds something special to the dish. Marmite also makes a tasty and warming drink in the winter, ideal for a simple lunch with some freshly-baked bread.

Marmite is a great all-rounder and a very British tradition. I don't understand how anyone can say they hate it - I love it!

Summary: Has many uses in the kitchen besides spreading on toast!
