Advantages: Vegetarian, great sorce of folic acid and vitamin B12, lovely on toast

Disadvantages: Strong smell and taste - not to everyone's liking

Marmite is a very strange food substance. It has such a unique taste that it is true, you do either love it or hate it. I'm with the love it crowd, but I can understand why people would hate it as the taste is such a strong one. I can't explain what it is I love about marmite!

I'm a vegetarian and marmite is 100% vegetarian (approved by the vegetarian society) and contains vitamin B12 which is vital for vegetarian as this is what they lack from not eating meat. It is a yeast extract and not to be confused with Bovril which I have never tried as I believe this not to be vegetarian friendly!

The ingredients are yeast extract, salt, vegetable extract, niacin, thiamin, spice extracts, ribflavin, folic acid, celery extract and vitamin B12.

A suggested serving is for 4g for adults and 2g for children. It is delicious spread thinly on toast (that is my favourite way to eat marmite), or I also really like cheese and marmite sandwiches, also lovely on crackers, or with cucumber in sandwiches.

The taste is so hard to describe, it's very strong, mildy spicey, but definitely savoury, nothing sweet about the taste at all. It is a thick brown consistency, but be warned, if you are trying it for the first time, you don't need a lot. I find that if you are making a sandwich you only need a thin layer on one piece of bread. My boyfriend hates the stuff, but doesn't realise that even if you love it, you don't want too much of it. He made me a sandwich and it was almost oozing out of the sides. It was not nice, and that is coming from a marmite lover!

Marmite comes in round glass jars with screw lids, and in the sizes 125g (approx £1.21), 250g (approx £2.00), 500g (approx £3.80 and a squeezy plastic container version which contains 200g and is approx £2.40.

If you try it and you don't like it, it is unlikely that you will grow to like it as it is something that you love or hate. I have loved it ever since I was a child.

Be warned though, if you eat marmite on toast or a marmite sandwich and you try to kiss you partner, clean your teeth first, because it does smell, and if you have a marmite hater as a partner he or she will not thank you!

Summary: Quite simply love it or hate it - a slogan which is so true.
