Advantages: Amazing texture

Disadvantages: Nothing special

Marmite (and it's cousin, vegemite) are two of the foods that have been around me as long as I can remember - from having my mother eat it by the bucket around as a child, to having flatmates who spread it on toast like it's going out of fashion, I've never been far from a tub of the gooey stuff.

It's consistency amuses me - it's gloopy in this really obscure way, and quite fun to spread on foodstuffs (as long as it hasn't been in the fridge. then the fun is gone). It smoothes over most things evenly, and has this obscure manner of not really sticking to fingers too badly like other similar spreads.

However, the taste I am apathetic to. I neither love it nor hate it. If there's no other spread in, then I will eat it on a tortilla and am quite content. However, if there is some peanut butter, nutella or jam in, then I would immediately reach for those as I genuinely don't think that Marmite is amazing, but rather a dull alternative to other similar spreads for bread or rolls.

The salty taste is unusual, and I can imagine if I ate it for a few days on the trot it would become quite addictive, and you'd start to crave the stuff. However, the high level of yeast can be quite explosive for those with IBS or any similar disorders, and I know that personally if I want to eat it I have to have an ibuscopan tablet straight after if I do not want to be ill.

The jar is quite pleasing to the eye, and immediately recognisable - there's rarely an issue with finding the stuff on the shelf. It is also pretty easy to open - there's not usually much struggling with the lid, which can be a real nightmare.

The substance is high in protein with no fat, and is good on celery for those on the Atkins diet (not a diet I'd recommend!). It is low in calories too, and is a pretty good diet food overall.

Personally, I think that marmite is neither amazing nor repulsive, but rather a low calorie alternative to pastes like peanut butter or pate.

Summary: Love it or hate it? maybe not...
