Advantages: Original
Disadvantages: Bit like marmite you either love it or hate it
Who would have thought such an innocent lookin jar of Yeast extract would cause so much contraversy across the taste buds of the nation!
Marmite is what you get when you brew beer - yeast extract. It has added spices and flovouring along with a hefty amount of salt! Its not particulairly bad for you but I would guess a piece of fruit would do you better. That being said I dont really listen to nutritional information. As far as the big wigs are concerned everything is bad for you!
Getting back to marmite. It has a very tangy flavour but thats about aswel as I can describe it. It is similar in texture to bovril ( or tar) and can stick to you teeth quite easily (if you have sensitive teeth have a toothbrush in hand). You really have to try marmite to get what it is.
Now it has always come in the little jar you can see in the picture. A knife or a spoon is good enough to get it out. You dont need much mind! Ive seen those squeezy bottles and the like out there but stay away. Marmite is meant to be hard to get out of the jar! Its part of the enjoyment.
Marmite is good on toast in particular (not brown bread) but it also works well on a fe other things. Here is what I have tried that I liked
Cheese buttie
Baked potatoe
crackers
on its own!
the adventurous may put it in a stir fry
You get the idea anyway - most things savoury work. However here are a few that dont:
Penut butter and marmite buttie (was sick)
Chicken and marmite (not sure why it seems it should be a match)
Bacon and marmite
Marmite crips were awful!
Amy winehouse
Overall however I love marmite. You have to be careful with it. It can be brutal in large quantities.
Summary: One worth trying
