Advantages: Tastes great, lasts a long time, intimidates Americans.
Disadvantages: Very salty.
I was working with a young American lad some time ago and he picked up a jar of Marmite and asked what it was.
I told him it was a sort of British icon, you love it or you hate it, etc etc.
I also told him that sometimes we spread it thinly on toast and give it to babies to chew on. He said he would try it. I told him twice that it was very strong and to spread it on his toast fairly thinly.
Now this lad had been irritating me a bit all weekend with his "I know everything, so don't try to tell me." attitude, so.......having warned him already, I didn't intervene when he slapped about a quarter of a bottle on and took a huge mouthfull.
He was too polite to spit it out, (shame that!) so continued chewing and finally got it swallowed. When his eyes had stopped watering and he had drunk down about a quart of water I asked him innocently what he thought.
His reply stayed with me until this day: "You give this to your children????? You really give this to your children?? No wonder you're a race of Goddam eccentrics!"
Now that sort of sums the taste of Marmite up, it's eccentric. Nothing else tastes like it nor ever will. Unlike the hapless American, if you have got enough sense to only put a little bit on you can enjoy it's delicious savoury, salty taste.
I don't imagine it's particularly good for you because of the high salt content although it is rich in B Vitamins. So as long as you don't overdo it I suppose they balance each other out. I'd list all the ingredients but you are as capable of reading the yellow label on the top as I am. (Probably more so because the writing is too small for me without my glasses!)
A 250 gramme bottle costs around £2.50 and lasts a long time. It is one of life's mysteries, but there always seems to be enough for another butty in the bottom (or sides) of a Marmite jar.
You can also use a spoonful mixed into a mugful of boiling water as a hot drink. It's very tasty taken like this and fills you up. If you are trying to lose weight it can help to have a mug of it ten minutes before your dinner and you won't feel like eating as much.
If you have hated it since being a child, try it again and see what you think. If you still hate it you could always send it to me care of DooYoo! :) (Or to America!)
Summary: Not for the fainthearted!

kelly10 - 26/08/08 I've never fancied it as a hot drink, but on toast, crumpets, bread, crackers, and probably more that I've forgotten, I absolutely love it. |
