Advantages: great stock cupboard snack spread
Disadvantages: quite salty
Mmmmmm, marmite. What a wonderful invention.
Having said that, it appears it creates a different view in different people. It is one of those things that you are unlikely to feel ambivilant about. Generally you love it or hate it. Whats also interesting is that the same thing applies in cats. I have one cat who will eat it off your finger, and the other just scuriies off nose in the air.
So strong stuff.
What is it though. A vegetable extract paste, that is brown and very sticky. Full of useful vit B complex, and apparently this was added in WW1 when many suffered from a disorder called beri beri- which B1 treats.
Ingredients;
Yeast Extract
Salt
Vegetable Extract
Niacin
Thiamin
Spice Extracts
Riboflavin
Folic Acid
Celery Extract
Vitamin B12
Nutritionally, it is a low fat/sugar snack, that is completely vegetarian, and has few natural allergens, apart from the celery extract. It is however quite high in salt content. Marmite suggest the amount needed to cover the tip of a knife is around 8% of daily salt intake.
I also think it is a great alternative to oxo/bovril, for veggies wishing to flavour gravy.
The thing that really surprises me is that it has celery extract in it, and I hate celery !
Everyone has their own fav way of eating it. Personally, on white bread and butter is best, but also lovely with in a cheese sandwich. On the marmite website there are lots of sandwich and main meal recipes provided by Gary Rhodes.
Marmite crisps are heavenly, my fav of all crisps, but few places seem to stock them. Sadly, even more salt though!
Safe to safe we seem to get thru a jar relatively quickly.
If you haven't tried it, go on.
I think I'll have a marmite sandwich now, after all the typing
Summary: Its always in my cupboard
