Advantages: None.

Disadvantages: Tastes disgusting and too much salt so bad for you too.

For years I was convinced that Marmite was made from beef extract but in fact nothing could be further from the truth and Marmite is in fact 100% suitable for vegetarians.

The actual ingredients make for very dodgy reading and I think if I had read them first I would never have even tried the stuff, mind you that would have been a good thing because I hated it any way.

The ingredients read along the lines of yeast extract, salt, vegetable extract, spice extracts, riboflavin, folic acid, niacin, thiamin, celery extract, vitamin B12, it sounds more like a medicine or an ointment than something you would want to eat and to be honest it tasted like an ointment or medicine too.

This stuff is super salty and I think that would be because without the salt it would be totally inedible, I tried this on toast after being as good as forced into it by my wife who told me I was as bad as the kids for not trying things. It was absolutely horrible and after three bites my Marmite experience was over for good.

My wife eats this on a fairly regular basis and my dad did too but god only knows why, it comes in a little dark brown jar with a yellow lid on it, so keep an eye out for it and avoid it like the plague!!

Summary: Avoid it like the plague!

There is a lower salt version of Marmite called Vegemite available in health shops. I reckon if you've not got much money a slice of toast with Vegemite is very cheap.
