Advantages: yeasty goodness, B-vitamins

Disadvantages: high in salt

Marmite is famous for being a food substance that you (allegedly) either love or hate (I'm actually neutral). Dark, yeasty and incredibly salty, it makes for an excellent toast topping, hot drink, soup stock and general source of B-vitamins for vegetarians and vegans alike. Add it to cheese on toast for a perfect supper, though don't blame me for any funny dreams you may have as a consequence!

Just like archaeologists have found honey that is thousands of years old in Egyptian tombs, archaeologists in years to come will undoubtedly find jars of marmite and my betting is that it will remain perfectly preserved and will taste exactly the same in the future as it does now.

I have eaten marmite in the UK and in New Zealand and can report that the two do taste reasonably similar, though British marmite is much closer in flavour to antipodean vegemite. Neither taste much like bovril, which isn't vegetarian at all.

In recent years, special edition jars of marmite have been released, most notably a champagne flavour. How anything can be expected to compete with such an overpowering yeasty flavour is anyone's guess!

Conclusion: let's face it, you already know if you love it or not. An acquired taste or an abomination, you take your pick.

Recipe tip: Switch the pickle in your sandwich for thinly spread marmite, for a bit of variety.

Summary: Good choice for the vegan who wants an umami-rich food,
