Advantages: Its good for you
Disadvantages: The jar
Love It, Hate it seems a strange way to advertise your product but with Marmite it works. I'm definetly on the love it side.
I've never really thought that much about what Marmite is and where it came from. After looking at the Marmite website I am now much more informed so will try to enlighten you also as briefly as I can.
To make Marmite the used brewer's yeast is broken down to release soluble amino acids and proteins. This material is then concentrated and filtered before going through a top secret process for flavour development. At the end of all this, you have a yeast extract paste, to which is added an extra blend of vitamins, vegetable and spice extracts to create the Marmite you either Love or Hate.
Oh and the name do you know where that came from? Look on a label and you will see a dish on the front. This is a French casserole dish called a Marmite and this is similar to what the first jar Marmite was sold in. Only in the 1920's did the glass jar come in.
Ok lesson over.

So what is the black stuff made of?
----------------------------------------------
Well it has Yeast Extract, Salt, Vegetable Extract, Niacin, Thiamin, Spice Extracts, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Celery Extract and Vitamin B12. It also carries an allergy warning that it contains celery extract.
In a 4g adult serving you get 9kcal, 1.5g protein, 0.8g carbohydrate, 0g fat, 0.1g fibre, 0.2g sodium, 35.6% of RDA of Niacin, 6.6% RDA of Thiamin, 17.5% RDA of Riboflavin, 50% RDA Folic Acid and 60% of RDA of Vitamin B12.
To me it looks a great way of getting your RDA of some of these more obscure nutrients. I've no idea what else I eat that would give me these things.

The Taste
--------------
I'd like to tell you what it tastes like but it's a very difficult taste to describe. It has a strong kind of salty taste but that doesn't put me off covering my toast in it. I probably use more than the 4g they suggest!! It's one of these things that you just have to try for yourself.
So what can you do with Marmite except put it on your toast?
Well my personal favourite is to put it on toast but then put scrambled egg on top. Mmm tastes delicious.
Another one is in a toastie with cheese, just don't burn your mouth!!
I've also added it to soups and some people use it like Bovril in drinks. The website has lots of other suggestions to.
Oh and another use, I put some on any tablets I need to give to animals, works wonders, they seem to love it and the tablet disapears without any fuss.
-----------
The Jar
-----------
The only thing I dislike is the shape of the jar. It looks pretty and its unmistakeably Marmite but I can never get all the spread out at the end and I hate wasting it!!
Summary: A yeast extract spread you either love or hate
