Advantages: tasty
Disadvantages: none for me
Marmite. You either love it or hate it apparently and I fall into the love it category. Last night I had a bit of a Marmite craving going on so I had some spread thinly on a piece of bread and have to say it was very tasty! The last time I had the Marmite out my niece was visiting and at 3 years old she'd already developed a love for Marmite so we shared a sandwich. Why is the population so divided on Marmite though? I think it's because it's such a stong taste. Rather like the loud guy in the pub who some people hate because he's so overbearing and other people love because his loudness is fun!
My jars of Marmite last me ages, I have no idea how long it lasts after opening because it doesn't tell me on the jar, it simply states to store in a cool dark place so mine goes in a cupboard. Marmite contains B vitamins, folic acid and is 100% vegetarian as it is made from yeast extract. The guidelines for a serving are 4g for adults and 2g for children so even Unilever who make the product understand the need for moderation with this product! A 4g serving provides 9 calories, 1.5g protein, 0.8g carbohydrate, 0.1g fibre, 0.2g sodium and no fat whatsoever but you're never going to be able to eat large enough quantities of Marmite for the stats to matter much.
The glass jar is dark brown and the lid bright yellow. Inside the Marmite is a very dark brown and sticky in consistency. It's very thick and you can easily tear your bread as you spread it on so a thin layer of margarine underneath is a good idea. When spreading it is also a wise idea to try and get it as even as possible or you end up with a couple of mouthfuls where the Marmite is too strong.
The smell is lovely, very yeasty and almost meaty even though it contains no meat products. It smells exactly as it tastes too which is very strong and there's a definite bite to it. It's very hard to explain how it tastes to someone who's never tasted it but it does have an almost beefy taste underneath the very strong yeasty flavour. Of course as most people know Twiglets are Marmite flavour and they're a good way to establish if you like it or not!
I always buy the 125g jars for about £1.20 but there is also a larger 250g jar for about £2.20. I buy the smaller one because my partner falls into the hate it camp so it's just me and the odd visit from my niece where the Marmite gets used. It seems to last well stored in a cupboard and I've never had a jar go off even though I have them open for ages.
It's yeasty, slightly meaty, sticky goo that goes very well with a variety of other ingredients in sandwiches. I often have it with cheese or tomato and it adds a bit of zing to the taste. I would still say though even if you love it you don't need much as it's very strong.
A full 5 stars from me!
Summary: If you love it recommended, if not don't buy it.
