Advantages: It is salty
Disadvantages: It is salty
You know the expression that there are no black and whites in life only greys well let me introduce you to my mate Marmite. You either love it or hate it. Loving or hating marmite is the only thing in my life I have found to be black or white, like death and taxes loving marmite is something you do or don't. What is all the fuss about? I have thought long and hard about this and tried to come up with a description of its taste and ..... well ..... it is salty. What does it look like well it looks like meconium, you know a babies first poo. So pretty much plenty to loathe then. Yet for some unfathomable reason I love the stuff. Marmite contains yeast extract, salt, vegetable extracts, niacin, thiamine, spice extracts, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin b12. It is one hundred percent suitable for vegetarians and is best used as a spread or a drink. It is a great mixer bringing out the flavour of everything you care to mix with it. Some of my favourites are peanut butter, banana, bacon and egg and meringue. Is Marmite good for you? I don't know. 100g provides 234 kcal, 43.0g protein, 14.8g Carbohydrate, 0.4g fat, 2.4g fibre, 4.5g sodium, 5.8mg thiamine, 2.5mg folic acid. So it is salty. Average servings weigh about 4g hence it is low fat, high protein and therefore catabolic. This means you probably should limit the amount you eat if you have high blood pressure, and it is a useful slimming aid. Vegemite is the Antipodean's equivalent. Marmite over there has meat extract in it and tastes more like Bovril. Typically sensible then is the "veggie" or "mar" tag. Why it is called marmite in the UK then, baffles me. Marmite's popularity is probably based on the fact that marmite soldiers are a great weaning food. So there is something primeval to most of us going back to our childhoods about the taste and sensation of marmite soldiers. Also there have been great advertising campaigns about the fact
that it tastes disgusting to 50 percent of us. Remember the ad where a great seduction scene is ruined after the first kiss because the bloke tasted marmite on his new girlfriends breath after she invites him in to give the dog a bone. So like it or loathe it marmite is the true food anathema. It only exists in black or white and no one can sit on this fence. What about you do you love marmite?
