Advantages: Just scrummy

Disadvantages: Too scrummy

Sometimes, especially if you are such a weak writer as me, the adjectives cannot be found to describe something. You know what it is you want to say but the words are totally unknown to you. I fear my humble reader this just might be one of these occasions. Trying to describe the taste of a Mars bar is going to be a tough challenge.

The packaging of a Mars Bar is perhaps just about as well known as the Coca Cola logo. The black seductive wrapper with the Gold and Red emblazoned MARS written across it's front has been with us now for 85 years. The Mars company was founded in 1911 by Frank Mars. He and his wife produced butter cream candies from their kitchen in Tacoma Washington. In 1920 they produced a product which was called Milky Way in the U.S. but was called Mars in Europe. The rest as they say is history. The Mars company has an annual turnover of $18 billion. A huge increase from their $300 million at the beginning of the 1970's.

The confection itself is probably a matter of taste. I don't know anyone personally who doesn't like them. Unfortuneately I was unable to get a Top Ten Sweets on the net to discover it's place in the sweet ranking but I'm pretty sure it's way up near the top.

A Mars Bar is approx 5 inches long 1 inch high and about 1 ¼ inches wide. At it's core is a soft whipped Malty chocolate filling, this is subsequently topped with lashings of delicious soft toffee. A very generous covering of milk chocolate then encloses this confectioner's masterpiece. The top of the bar has been decorated with a few raised lines of thicker chocolate. Someone knew what he or she was doing when they made this for the first time. It fits perfectly into your hand. The raised ridges stop it from sliding out, and the smell of chocolate gets the taste buds tingling with delight.

The ends obviously having more chocolate than the rest can be eaten as the first two bites if one desires, but I like to keep one for the finale. The initial bite merely serves to introduce your taste buds to a mixture of sensations. Those being the smooth outer chocolate which slowly melts to let the toffee tease and excite the taste buds even more. The sticky sweet toffee is closely followed by the more sensuous whipped light choco-malty dream. At a pace designated by your enthusiasm the three flavours mingle together forming a final burst of rapturous glee, sending your taste buds on a momentary journey across the cosmos. The next bite is even better until once again you come to the piece at the end with more chocolate. The whipped filling is the same as that of our U.K. Milky Way which is also a Mars product. The whole experience will leave you wanting more, but resist the temptation. The only drawback I have with these lovelies is that they can be a bit sickly once you've passed the first two. LOL

Another popular way to eat a Mars Bar is to place it in the fridge until it is very cold. Once removed it can be cut into several scrummy pieces which you can they devour at your leisure. This is also a good way to see how they are made up. Either way you are getting one special chocolate treat.

One final method which I do enjoy although personally feel it detracts from the original pleasure is the Mars Crispie.

Take two Mars Bars and cut into blocks. Melt this in a pan with 1 ½ ounces of butter or marge. Add rice Crispies until you can't add any more. Firmly press this mixture into a suitable greased container, allow to cool and then cut into desired pieces. It's yummy.

The calories and that are off the scale here and the Bar itself weighs in at 35g. If you are really set on having one of these absolute delights then go for it. They are widely available and are priced in the region of 38p that's just over 1p per gram. Superb value in anyone's books.

Summary: A great choccie bar
