Advantages: A tasty fusion of chocolate, caramel and nougat.
Disadvantages: Quite sweet, to many and you wont want one for a while!
Mars is a chocolate bar from the Masterfoods company, Mars are a great chocolate bar and if you see one when you're out and about, treat yourself!
Packaging
I got a Mars bar multipack (more is better!) which contained a lovely nine bars. The outer packaging like a Mars bar was the distinctive black you have come to know and love, along with the classic red Mars logo which is on a golden background. Below that they have tried something new and have pictures of the smooth caramel, some milk splashing around and some delicious milk chocolate. The new effect I think works well and it livens up what would otherwise be rather bland packaging.
You also get a really handy indicator on the front advising you of the calories per bar as well as a huge sign saying, "Great value, 9 full size bars". Full size, great! Normally they make the bars smaller for multipacks so it's a welcome change that they have decided to include the big bars that you would normally purchase separately. To the rear of the packaging you get a picture of an open Mars bar with the words, milk nourish, glucose energy and milk chocolate feel good. This is I suppose to give the effect that you need to get Mars bars as they give you energy are nourishing and make you feel good, how could anybody resist after reading that! You also get your standard ingredients list and nutritional information.
Mars
When you tear open the pack 9 delicious full sized bars will fall out, all are as you would expect with their black wrapper, Mars logo but you get a little box which says not for resale and there are no ingredients list on the back. Once you have selected a bar and pulled off the wrapper you are greeted with the smell of a sweet and creamy milk chocolate, the bar is rectangular and the top is slightly messy with chocolate drizzled over the top. I broke my bar in two and I could immediately see the caramel. Your bar will consist of three separate layers; on the outside you get the milk chocolate shell that holds it all together, the top layer is the sweet and sticky caramel while the bottom layer is the soft and sweet nougat.
The tastes work extremely well, the three ingredients fuse together to form something really quite satisfying, the chocolate as you would expect is really tasty and creamy, the caramel is very sweet and sticks to your teeth but again is very tasty, the nougat is slightly chewy and has a subtle sweet flavour to it which is also very good. Together the flavour is unbeatable and the textures just melt into each other providing one of the most satisfying chocolaty experiences around. A really fun thing about Mars is if you want, you can eat them in two goes, you can lift the top chocolate and caramel layer off with your teeth and eat that, then go and eat the nougat and chocolate! If you don't mind making a little bit of a mess I would recommend this as then you can easily distinguish the flavours. Mars bars are really quite sweet though so if you are not already a lover of all things chocolaty and sweet this probably won't change your mind. I have also gone through periods where I have got sick of them so if you allow yourself a daily bar of chocolate remember to mix things up and have something different every day!
Nutritional Stuff
In each delicious full sized Mars bar you will get a huge 284calories, 37.7 grams of sugar, 11.1 grams of fat of which 6.2% is saturated fat and 0.29 grams of salt. I've managed to polish off a whopping 41% of my daily sugar allowance in around ten minutes, and that included playing with my Mars bar, sniffing it and all! Not really the healthiest of things but I suppose as it contains all that sugar, you could use it as an energy bar if you go walking or something.
Price & Conclusion
My multipack of Mars bars cost £2.30 and for nine full sized bars that not to bad, it works out at around 25p per bar. A single Mars bar would otherwise probably cost anywhere from 40-60p, so if you want to save yourself a little cash and bring your chocolate treat with you I would advise you get the multipack. If you have lots of kids, I wouldn't advise getting them the full size bars as they are rather large! You can get a small fun size bar which is probably big enough. Masterfoods also do a lot of other great chocolate and sweet treats so keep your eye out for delights such as, Maltesers, M&Ms, Twix, Galaxy, Snickers and many more. Overall I love Mars, the taste is really great with the caramel, chocolate and nougat all working wonderfully well with each other, on the downside but they are rather sweet and I can get sick of them after too many!
Summary: A tasty bar of chocolate.

blue_ashleigh - 13/03/08 I was about six when I ate too many Mars bars (it was a LOT!) at a party and was sick. I've not been able to eat a Mars since! |
