A Mars a Day helps you work, rest and play!!
That was the advertising slogan for the Mars Bar up until 2002 when it was changed to "Pleasure you can't measure." Apparently the work, rest and play slogan was deemed too masculine and did not appeal to women. I do remember the ad's on TV from when I was younger featuring people climbing up mountains and doing sport etc and I can see how it would look masculine but that never, as a woman put me off the chocolate bar. It's chocolate after all and a very tasty one at that.
The Mars Bar is a chocolate bar manufactured by Mars Incorporated. It was actually first manufactured in the United Kingdom in 1932. The son of the American candy manufacturer rented a warehouse in Slough and began making the bar there.
The bar consists of milk chocolate covering a layer of nougat with caramel on top of the nougat. The bar always looks to me like quite a thick, meaty bar in a way and I always tend to have one when I am looking for a chocolate bar to really fill me up. The layer of nougat is the thickest layer by far. It is quite light and fluffy but definitely thick and filling. It is a kind of light chocolate colour. The caramel on top is lovely and gooey so that when you bite into a bar you always get a bit of the caramel that comes off in a big string. The caramel is a lovely golden colour and really has a great taste to it. The milk chocolate surrounds all of the bar. The sides and the top are where it is most thick and it's nice to bite the top layer of chocolate off. It has a bit of a rippled effect at the top so it gives it a nice texture.
Mars to me has always been a good quality chocolate bar with a great taste and does fill you up. It's probably not as exciting as other chocolate bars but it's a staple and one you always come back to when you want something you know tastes good.
The packaging for the Mars bar is quite distinctive too. It comes in a black wrapper with Mars written on it in cursive writing in red letters. To me this is quite bold and does keep with the masculine tradition of the bar. I think that is because of the black wrapper but should not be off-putting to any women who want to eat this.
There are quite a few different sizes of Mars bar that are sold. The fun size which is 19.7 grams can be found in chocolate multi packs and are really good little treats for kids or adults lunchboxes and if you just want a bite or two of chocolate. I however always end up eating about 4 or 5 of these as they seem so small so I argue it must be ok to eat lots!!
The regular size bar is 62.5g and comes with a whopping 284 calories. I think this is quite a lot but like I said it is quite a heavy, filling bar so it does make sense. The Kingsize is huge and is too much for me to eat, it's 84g!!
So all in all a great chocolate bar and I will leave you with an astonishing bit of information - according to the Mars website, in 1996 they estimated that more than 70% of the British population ate a Mars bar in the previous year!

- 24/11/08 Am I the only person who has to eat these by nibbling off the chocolate all the way round, then eating the caramel and chocolate off the top, then rolling the nougat swiss roll style before eating it???
Great, hunger inducing, review, now what in my house is chocolate?? |
