Advantages: Very sweet.
Disadvantages: Very sickly.
I find that I really have to be in the mood for a Mars bar. Give me a Snicker any time or day or hour and won't say no but only give me a Mars bar when I ask for one or you might just get it thrown right back in your face! Well that's a bit extreme.....I'd probably just politely decline or go halves with you!
The faithful Mars Bar has been around since 1932 and according to Wikipedia a guy called Forrest Mars rented a small factory in Slough. His great self and another twelve people started maufactoring the chocolate bar and although it's changed in size over the years the basic ingrediants have stayed the same.
The chocolate comes in lots of different sizes including a 'Duo' which in my humble opinion is far too much and I'm not a small eater by any means, just read some of my food reviews to see this! My personal favourite is the 'Funsize' bar because they are just enough and if it's not then you can just have another one! They also come in the standard size of 58g which will set you back around 50p in this day and age.
The Mars' standard packaging has always been the same since I can remember; the black outer with the red writing scrawled across the front. The bar itself is made up of chocolate, nougat and caramel which I find very sweet.
There are a lot of different textures to the bar when you bite into it. First you get the nice layer of hard chocolate (much better if it's been in the fridge) then there's the soft runny caramel and then your teeth hit the nougat which is a bit tougher to contend with. I find that if I take too much off the bar then I just can't cope with it in my mouth because the nougat is so chewy. I end up chewing but not getting anywhere and when I eventually do manage to chew the mixture into a smaller portion, my jaw is so tired that I can't be bothered to take another bite but of course I normally persevere! Anyway so be warned and only bite off what you can handle or you might end up doing what my son does which is 'Uh, Uh' at which point I hold out my hand so he can spit it all into my hand (that's motherhood for you!).
The Mars is so sweet that it's about the only chocolate that I have which I can only eat one of. I find that if it goes in the freezer then this takes some of the sweetness away for some reason. If I have one then I tend to cut it up into small pieces and add it to vanilla ice cream which makes the whole thing more enjoyable. However if I am on the blob and I am crying out for some chocolate then this will usually hit the spot because it's sooooo sweet.
Over all the Mars is a timeless classic and I'm sure it will still be around when I'm dead and buried. It's a good filling pick-me-up but sometimes it's too much.
Summary: Sometimes nice, sometimes not!
