Advantages: Nougat
Disadvantages: Too heavy sometimes
The famous Mars Bar was first made in Slough of all places where they actually continue to do their manufacturing from today. It has been around since 1932 and has a solid long-standing position in the market. I think if people were asked to name five chocolate bars then this would be on the list for most people I would think. A Mars is a mix of milk chocolate, caramel and nougat.
A Mars comes in a black wrapper with large red and gold lettering on the front. At one point they actually changed the name of the bar to Believe to support one of the football tournaments, the World Cup I think. This was only temporary for about three months but I thought it was a bit dumb. This contains 13% of the guideline daily calorie count, a fair bit actually, it's probably one of the highest around. It contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives on the up side. It currently weighs in at 58 grams though they tend to reduce the weight slightly and hope the consumer doesn't notice as it was 62.5 grams and yet the price was kept the same.
Inside the bar you have a thick layer of nougat, with a layer of caramel surrounded by milk chocolate. I think it is definitely one of the more filling chocolate bars on the market. It's totally different from say a Time Out which is designed to be tasty and yet light. This is big and hearty and if you buy chocolate bars to stop your tummy rumbling mid-morning this would be a good choice. My favourite part is certainly the nougat. It's soft, squishy and sweet and tastes really creamy. The caramel is really good and luckily it doesn't get caught in my teeth all the time. The milk chocolate is nice but perhaps not up to the standard of Dairy Milk or Galaxy but this is quite possibly a good thing as the bar is quite sickly already more creaminess might make it unpalatable. I find this to be a satisfying bar of chocolate as I never think oh I could eat another one now with this unlike other bars. It does feel as though you have had a solid, if unhealthy, snack.
As well as the standard Mars Bar costing roughly 50p, now too you can get the Mars Duo which is two smaller bars together designed for sharing and weighs 91 grams. You can also get five packs of Mars from the supermarket which cost about £1.50. They also do fun-size Mars which are perfect for kiddies and people love for parties. Then there's the famous Scottish version where they deep-fry the bar. I have yet to try that but it sounds a bit strange. You will probably also know the famous catch-phrase 'A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play'. I do like this bar a lot but sometimes find it a bit much so don't eat them as often as other bars.
Summary: Nice bar
