Advantages: Nice taste, quite filling
Disadvantages: Sugary and fatty
Mars was brought out in the United Kingdom in 1932 as a sweeter version of the American favourite chocolate bar, the Milky Way.
The Mars bar was created by Mars in Slough and offered something entirely new for the British public. Rather than being a simple chocolate bar it contained nougat and caramel, this made the bar even less healthy than other chocolate bars but was possibly the start of innovation in the chocolate bar world.
Packaged in its distinctive black wrapper with a red wording it is a really easily identifiable brand and is still incredibly popular. The saying 'A Mars a day helps you work rest and play' is also synonomous with the brand, it was considered that the glucose in the bar was good for energy, although it has also been proven that it is incredibly high in calories and only worth eating in moderation.
Bars are available in one packs in mini formats in bags or in five packs, they can be bought in supermarkets, corner shops, anywhere that sells sweets.
Mars bars are not generally used in cooking although there was a short lived spell of deep frying mars bars for that ultimate calorie rush, thankfully its one of those fads which faded away and saved the waistlines of those foolish enough to consider such a diet.
I enjoy a bar every week or two and do find I get a sugar and energy rush from it, I also find it makes me so full I don't need a meal, but that is obviously due to the sugar and calorie content, its a nice treat, in moderation. Well worth buying in a 5 pack for best value.
Summary: Good in Moderation, great in deep fat fryers!!!
