Advantages: Incredible taste
Disadvantages: Battered versions are coronary nightmares
Mars is simply THE quintessential chocolate bar - it's surely the best-known chocolate bar in the world, and is something of an English hallmark, having been created here!
The original Mars bar comes with a thick layer of nougat topped with creamy milk chocolate, and below this, a layer of caramel again covered in chocolate. There are numerous varieties, such as the mini roll (which saw me through some tough all nighters during the exam period!), and also funsize for a light bite. Other countries get the likes of Orange Mars, and there are also dark chocolate, and other numerous limited edition iterations that are incredible hard to find.
The Mars bar contains 260 calories, and weighs in at 58.1g. As far as healthy chocolate bars go, this is probably near the top compared to other bars, unless you deep-fry it or something. I must admit to having tried a battered Mars bar when on a bender through my town center, and although INCREDIBLY unhealthy (you can practically feel your heart seize up as you take a bite), it does taste rather nice, as the hot batter melts the Mars bar inside. Beautiful.
It has a very special taste that virtually everyone knows, and is pretty well-priced. Sometimes if I'm feeling cheeky, I'll get the King-Size, or Mars Duo packs, which are better value for money although obviously less healthy, simply because there's more of it! Nevertheless, they won't affect your waistline too much if eaten in moderation, although if you value your figure, I would steer well clear from any chippies offering the battered variety (well, maybe try it just once when plastered!)
Summary: A quintessentially English choccie bar
