Advantages: CHEAP AND CHEERFUL CHOCOLATE BAR
Disadvantages: TOO SWEET
MARS BAR CHOCOLATE BAR
Introduction
What is a Mars Bar? It is a chocolate bar, which was first invented in 1932 and was manufactured in Slough. The name Mars comes from Forrest Mars who was an American confectionary maker. Its main ingredients are glucose, sugar and milk chocolate, and for a 58gram bar there is 259 calories.
Wrapping
The wrapping is black and gold and has been this since it was originally started. I don't know if any of you remember but the name 'Mars Bar' was briefly replaced by the name 'Believe' in 2006. It came out to celebrate some football tournament. Maybe Mars thought it would sell more under this name. Why 'Believe'? No idea to be honest!
Taste
The taste of the Mars Bar is very sweet and I would say the taste depends on how you eat it. I eat all the chocolate off first and then the nougat and lastly the caramel and chocolate topping. In my opinion this makes the bar less sickening and you get the flavour of each individual bit. The nougat tastes like light soft chocolaty chewy toffee but without the stickiness. The chocolate is rich and very sweet. The caramel is a soft melting toffee. If you eat all at once the flavour is all mixed up and I am not sure I can identify anyone of them other than maybe the chocolate.
Advertising
The Mars Bar used to be famous on television, most of you will remember the adverts with the slogan 'A Mars a day helps you work rest and play'.
Opinion
I can't believe that any bar of chocolate would make anyone; work rest or play, and the adverts insinuated that this snack was in fact 'healthy'. Nowadays, with the rise in obesity it is dangerous to advertise this as being 'good for you'. I am not saying that it is totally bad, as any food can be good in moderation, but a piece of fruit would be much more beneficial (boring though), and for energy perhaps a banana would fill you up as much or more than a Mars Bar.
Having said this I would agree with most of you out there that Mars Bars are great and like me I suspect you are tempted now and then. I just disagree with advertising so much 'junk food', when more should be done in reducing the prices of foods, which are good for us.
I would recommend a Mars Bar to take on a survival weekend, as with any chocolate it does give you energy, which gives you an instant lift, (necessary to get you going - short term) but after the initial energy burst will be followed by an energy low, but all food in moderation are 'good for you'.
One other point - years ago a Mars Bar was a real feast. Thick chunky chocolate, thick caramel, and lots of nougat. I would say double the size. What's happened? It is now half the size for the same equivalent money. My point is I would only ever want to eat one Mars Bar, as I felt so sick afterwards it would put me off for weeks.
The cost of a Mars Bar varies from shop to shop, but they are about 50p for a small one and 80p for the duo (no more king-size). If you insist on buying them best option is to by the packs (much cheaper). You can get 4 mars for about £1.
Finally the Mars Bar is one of the oldest and most popular long standing and still going strong chocolate bar on the market, so all said and done has to be good!
