Disadvantages: Stolen Idea
~Introduction~
I have decided review this chocolate bar as it is relatively new in the chocolate bar world. I do have a particular grudge against companies who produce new products, as a shameful extension strategy to a flagging product or brand. In this case, it seems that Mars and Masterfoods have wanted to raise the profile of the Mars brand, by producing a 'quality' new chocolate bar. This does really annoy me and the fact they can't come up with a completely new idea, just shows that they are lazy and greedy too.
~The Bar~
This chocolate bar does seem to have some rather uncanny similarities with the Kinder Bueno bar that was released into the market a few years ago. There are two clearly defined sections of the bar that can be easily split. Each section is very light, as a result of the wafer interior. The wafer is coated in chocolate, which resembles a ripple in the ocean. Then, inside the crunchy wafer, is a soft and creamy centre. There is 'chocolaty' flavoured gooey cream inside, which is laced with the caramel that is such a crucial part of Mars products.
~Taste~
The chocolate bar has to be one of the most diverse in terms of the variety of flavours contained within it. There is everything from the chocolate coated crunchy wafer and the soft chocolaty centre to the caramel laced interior. There is so much going on at once. The wafer is the nicest part of the bar, when you initially bite into it you get a very nice sensation. The caramel comes through and gives you that traditional Mars bar taste. The soft centre is a very good addition to the caramel flavour that you are already getting, simply adding to the intensity of the flavour. I think that the taste and the contrasts are quite spectacular and very creative, but I do feel that they have pinched the idea of Kinder Bueno.
~Textures~
The tongue and mouth do have a rollercoaster of a journey when you tuck into a Mars Delight bar. The wafer give you a good crunchy feeling and also the air that is trapped inside it can give the tongue a slightly tingly feeling. This happens as the wafer dissolves on the tongue which is very nice. The interior is just ever so soft and that does feel very luxurious in its way.
~Wrapper~
I think that Masterfoods were aiming to produce a really upmarket chocolate bar that was viewed as very attractive by a wide variety of people. They wanted a posh and expensive looking product. The wrapper makes the chocolate bar appear very luxurious, with the darkish colours mixed in with white and creams. I would describe the wrapper as looking like bits of silk and therefore very expensive. There are hints of gold, that again add to the look. The 'Mars' logo is in the traditional large red lettering with 'Delight' appearing in a cream colour. The wrapper does stand out on the chocolate bar rack in any shop and it will catch your eye. I personally think that it is one of the coolest wrappers on any chocolate bar that you can buy today.
~Pricing~
The price does tend to vary widely, depending on where you choose to purchase the bar. The cheapest price that I have come across is £0.34 in the local newsagent which is pretty good for a bar of chocolate. I did once see it for £0.51 in a motorway service station, which is 50% more than in the newsagent. This bar does generally cost more than other bars, which does reflect its quality in some ways.
~Conclusion~
I have to say, that I am very impressed with the product that Masterfoods have come up with. They seem to have done a very good job in getting all of the elements spot-on and have produced a mighty fine chocolate bar at the end of it. They have used a variety of flavours and have found a good contrast between, whilst making sure that they go together. The only thing that annoys me is that they couldn't have been a bit more inventive, by moving away from the Mars branding and not copying the idea of Kinder Bueno. Other than that, I think that this a very nice bar of chocolate and it comes highly recommended.
