Advantages: Great galaxy taste
Disadvantages: Incredibly moorish = love handles
Introduction -
The Galaxy chocolate within Minstrels is without doubt my favourite chocolate; you can forget your Cadburys, it doesn't even come close to the sheer smooth and expensive taste that is galaxy. I still remember the first time I tasted galaxy, I was around my friend James's house and he brought some in, I was shocked at how tasty it was, soon after I was nagging at my parents to buy me some. Galaxy chocolate is actually manufactured by Mars but is still advertised as its own brand, and the Mars logo is hidden well away on the packaging.
Packaging -
I am actually reviewing the 225g bag, not the smaller one like in the picture, but the Minstrels are fundamentally the same. The bag is around 15cm high, 10cm wide and 4 cm deep. The bag is wholly brown, but there are lighter brown parts that rippling through the dark areas to signify a smooth look just like the chocolate tastes.
At the bottom of the bag are around 20 minstrels to show you what the product inside looks like and at the top is a dotted line that runs from one side of the bag to the other. This is accompanied by the words 'Easy to open & re-closable'. To open the bag simply tear along the line which has already had a small bit cut out of the side to start you off, I find this very easy and don't ever find myself ripping it open so they all fly everywhere.
The word 'Minstrels' is around two thirds of the way up and is in white text with a hint of brown so it stands out from the darker background, there is also the typical Galaxy logo just above it. There is also a small description of the treat you are about to have which read:
'Surrender to smooth and creamy GALAXY milk chocolate captured in crispy shell'
If this doesn't make you buy it what will!?...
On the back are the essentials such as calorie intake, ingredients and contact numbers. They are also suitable for vegetarians and have a shelf life of around a year. There is also a handy sticky label which is around 6 x 3cm, when you are finished eating the amount of Minstrels you want you tear the label off and reseal the bag, this will prevent your minstrels from going off, I find this very useful, I don't always want to eat a whole bag of Minstrels.
Taste, smell and statistics -
A Minstrel is around 2cm in diameter (they are circular) and 1cm deep at their deepest part (imagine a flying saucer) and you tend to get around 60 minstrels in a bag. Galaxy chocolate is extremely sweet, the cocoa within is very noticeable even amongst the flavour of the rich outer shell. Galaxy chocolate on its own I often find melts in your mouth far too quickly as you find yourself constantly eating more, however combined with a tough outer shell you get the same great taste with an increased longevity. I find Galaxy chocolate a treat; it has that kind of expensive feel to it, far more than Cadburys. If you happen to stick you head inside a bag of minstrels there isn't actually any kind of smell, all you can smell is the bag, not until you bite into the chocolate does any kind of smell appear, and even then it is a very weak smell.
Obviously with the increasing pressure to keep slim the statistics are important, so here they are:
Per 100g (Bag is 225g)
Energy 2110 KJ/ 503 Kcal
Protein 5.1g
Carbohydrate 70.5g
Of which sugars 69.1g
Fat 22.2g
Of which saturates 12.9g
Fibre 1.1g
Sodium 0.08g
Price -
You can pick one of these bags for around £1.79 and upwards in supermarkets and around £2.80 in cinemas, if you do go to the cinema I advise you buy a bag first. I think this price is very fair, I am more than happy to pay this for a bag of Minstrels.
Verdict and score -
A mixture of Galaxy chocolate and a crispy coating, what more do you need to satisfy those sweet cravings. Beware not to eat too much of them though, they are very Moorish and you may very well finish a bag before you know it. They are basically a glorified Smartie but far more tasty.
Taste - 9/10
