Minstrels - the Chocolate (not to be confused with medieval European bards who perform songs!!)

Minstrels can be described as milk chocolate buttons with a hard shell. They are almost like a disc as they are not flat but are quite thin and not in the shape of a ball. In fact they do rather look like a Cadburys buttons with a bit more thickness to it.
The inside is filled with lovely Galaxy chocolate. In fact, they have now been repackaged and are now sold as "Galaxy Minstrels." The front of the packet actually has Galaxy written on it so you definitely know that they contain Galaxy.

I don't normally go wild about Galaxy chocolate as I tend to find that when it is in the big bars it is too creamy and melts too quickly for me but in these hard shells the chocolate is perfect. The chocolate is lovely and smooth and definitely creamy. It is milk chocolate not dark chocolate. It is contained in the shell and so it doesn't melt but when you bite into it you get the benefit of all that melt in the mouth goodness. Apparently the original marketing slogan for Minstrels was, "They melt in your mouth, not in your hands."

A new advertising campaign in July 2008 was accompanied by a new slogan: "Sophisticated silliness". I'm not entirely sure what direction they are going in with this marketing campaign as it doesn't really make me any more inclined to buy them and I can't actually recall seeing any advertising with this slogan on so maybe it is not working!

I would definitely agree that the minstrels melt in your mouth and not in your hand and the reason for it is because of the shell around the chocolate. This can be described as a crispy sugar coated shell, exactly like the shells you find on Smarties or M&M's. The shell is lovely and crispy and makes the chocolate piece very fun to bite into. The shells are a darker colour than the chocolate inside. They are probably closer to a dark chocolate colour.

The chocolates themselves are packaged in a brown wrapper with, as mentioned above, the fact that it is Galaxy chocolate as well as the word Minstrels written on the front. You can buy little snack packs of the chocolate which probably contain about 15 individual sweets but they are also sold in the big bumper packs which you mostly find in cinemas and are charged extortionate prices for!! They are extremely moorish though and if you do buy a bag in the cinema you can generally end up eating the whole thing!!

The main ingredients as with all chocolates include sugar, cocoa butter etc. These chocolates have quite a lot of calories. For example a 42g bag (which is quite little) has 212 calories in it, a lot more than say Maltesers which I would say are similar but hey if you only eat these once in a while and see them as a treat you will be fine!!

Summary: Galaxy Minstrels
