I should have stayed in the 'Dark' with this one! (Mars Midnight Bar)

It was only a few years ago that this limited edition Mars Bar made it's first appearance and am unsure why they have scrapped the Midnight part of the name, deciding this time around to call it simply a Mars Dark.

I wasn't terribly impressed with them then and the one I treated myself to today proved them haven't gotten any better. I was actually looking forward to it until I read Claribella's review earlier, she didn't like the bar so I was prompted to eat mine earlier than I had planned to see if she was right!

Indeed she was correct, the Mars Dark is as cloyingly sweet as I remember from it's previous incarnation. The dark chocolate is such poor quality that it tastes bitter and completely overwhelms the flavours of the caramel and nougat.

The nougat itself is a much paler version of that used in a normal Mars Bar, and with the colour they have removed all the flavour. I scooped out a little to try on its own and found it mildly sweet but very bland, similar in flavour to a Milky Way but with a far less rounded taste overall. The caramel is the same caramel used in a standard Mars Bar and is extremely sweet. Unfortunately this nice caramel cannot really be tasted over the sickening dark chocolate.

I found this to be an extremely heavy chocolate bar and not pleasant in the slightest. The texture of the nougat just isn't light at all and the Mars Dark is stodgy and very unpleasant in my opinion.

I won't buy one of these again. To be fair I'm not overly fond of Mars Bars anyway as I generally find them too sweet and sickly, but I do think they could have made this dark version so much nicer by using a better quality chocolate and allowing the other flavours in the bar to come through.

Summary: A chocolate bar that left me feeling sick after the very first bite!
