Advantages: tasty and inexpensive
Disadvantages: none
The amazing thing about Maryland Cookies is that they seem to have been around forever and they still seem to look and taste as good as they ever did, without having had to be 'new and improved' or subjected to a better recipe as seems to be the way of most things!
I am actually writing this review on behalf of my two daughters who have developed a real liking for these cookies which I tend to give them as an occasional treat! I save the really luxurious fully coated biscuits for myself! Anyway, as I say both my daughters have a fondness for these which are now called 'chocolate nic nics!' in our house due to my youngest daughter's inability to pronounce the word biscuit!
Anyway these cookies are round and average sized for your run of the mill biscuits. When you look at them though you can see that they are generously splattered with lots of chocolate chips! This helps contribute to a rough rugged texture which looks really very enticing!
They come in packs of 14 which are kept very fresh through being packaged in foil. It says on the pack that they should reach you in perfect condition but if they don't there is an address to which you can write! I have to say that I have never had any occasion to need to do this! It also states that Burtons (who make these cookies) have been passionate about baking for over seventy years so there is definitely a sense of tradition there.
So on to the taste experience... I have to confess that I have just had to eat one to make sure that I am providing the most up to date information! What I always like about a cookie is when it tends to melt in the mouth and you don't have to crunch it! This is certainly the case with these cookies which do melt in your mouth and have a rather delicious blend of biscuit and chocolate! And as I said before there is a rather generous helping of chocolate chips which is very good. There is nothing worse than looking forward to a chocolate chip cookie and then discovering there is only a miserable handful of chocolate chips! You won't say that about these!
Of course the problem is that because they are so tasty they are also rather moreish so it is very difficult to eat just one! In fact it's pretty impossible to eat just two either so if we are being honest we are looking at three of these accompanying a nice cup of coffee! So unfortunately this brings me on to the calorie content which is 57 per biscuit, which if multiplied by three is getting close to 180! Quite a serious chunk out of your daily intake! The packaging also tells you about the other nutritional information which you might be interested in for example fat is 2.6 and saturates 1.4 - nothing too alarming on their own but you do need to triple these! However it is very good to read on the packet that there are no artificial colours, sweeteners or preservatives, reduced salt, non GM ingredients, no hydrogenated fats and they are suitable for vegetarians! Because of the first point about nothing artificial being added, I am quite happy to let my daughters eat these now and again.
There is a list of ingredients on the packet, the main ones being wheat flour and chocolate chips.
Another thing I would say about these cookies is that they are rather lovely when dunked in coffee! You do have to be careful though, because if you dunk much longer than about a second you are in danger of losing half the biscuit! Don't say you weren't warned!
I also think that these cookies are quite reasonably priced. At the moment each 150g packed is priced at 65p in Sainsburys, but at the moment they also have an amazing offer where you can buy three packets for £1.00! I think I'll be stocking up!
Summary: Bet you can't eat just one!
