Advantages: Fun to share, Affordable, Choice of flavours

Disadvantages: Sticks can get broken before you open the packet

Mint matchmakers are my all time favourite, pig out and relax chocolates. When I am in need of a big treat and pampering I have a warm bubble bath with candles, a glass of wine and a box of matchmakers.

How do they come?

Mint matchmakers come in a green square box, about inch thick and the “goodies” slide out of the box. The box is very striking with the appearance of the matchmakers almost bursting out of the box. There are the white chunky letters of "Matchmakers" written diagonally across the box with the Nestle logo beside it. Depending what flavour you buy, the boxes are coloured accordingly. Matchmakers regularly change their flavours but currently available are the cool mint, sizzling strawberry, and zingy orange. Round each side of the box is written Nestle Matchmakers and there is a best before date on the right side. My packet was best before 01 May 04 - not very long but how long would you want a box of chocolates too last.

The box is wrapped in cellophane and has an easy tear off point which is marked by a gold tab. As soon as you rip this open you can smell the mint bursting out! The matchmakers are in a box which you get to by sliding of the top boxed packaging.
Beneath this you find to a sheet of protective corrugated plastic to stop the matchmakers from breaking. Underneath this the box is divided into two equal sides each with around 18 matchmakers in. Mine had 19 one side and 18 the other - am very proud that I managed to count this before wolfing them down! The matchmakers come to approximately 151 grams. Oh, and the packaging is completely recyclable and ozone friendly.

So what actually are they?

Matchmakers are a little bit of heaven in a stick! They are lengths of thin, knobberly chocolate. They are about 3 inches long and about a quarter of an inch wide. They are circular, very thin and knobberly in texture, which makes them crunchy in your mouth. Each Matchmaker is plain chocolate and is full of mint flavoured sugar pieces - yummy! Now I am not the biggest fan of plain chocolate, or white chocolate come to think of it, but the plain chocolate compliments the mint flavour. Cadburys have a milk chocolate with mint bits in it but I find this sickly, plain chocolate definitely wins in this case.

How do they taste

As they are knobberly in texture they are crunchy in your mouth. As they are long in shape you can suck them, nibble them, munch them or just tease them! The mint lingers in your mouth and the chocolate melts away. As they are so fun to eat you will find that soon you have eaten the whole packet. They are extremely moreish, I would be very surprised if you manage to leave any in the box. I find them fun to eat because they are an unusual shape. I do enjoy sharing them with my partner as you can put one in your mouth with half of it hanging out and they can bite the rest of in a fun, sharing, and a great start to a cosy evening in together!!

You are warned on the packaging that they may contain nut traces so be careful with any young children or allergy sufferers. 100g (i.e two thirds of the packet) will provide you with 477 calories, 4.3grams protein, 69.7 grams of carbohydrates or which sugars 63.4 grams, Fat 20.1 grams of which saturates 12.9 grams, Fibre 0.9grams and Sodium 0.1gram.

As an old fan of these I would definitely purchase them again and again and again!! I have given them as small presents before as I enjoy giving things to people that I like myself. They cost a mere £2 per box and are often on offer for two for £3 so not expensive at all and they give you a big pick me up! At £2 they are hardly going to be the poshest of chocolate but they are certainly good enough for me! Whenever I get Belgian chocolates or chocolate selection boxes I end up giving away half the box as I don’t like what’s inside. With these you know exactly what you are getting and believe me you will be coming back for more!!
