Advantages: A tasty and unusual snack, nicely shaped chicken pieces, lovely seasonings

Disadvantages: High in fat, expensive

This isn't the usual kind of snack I would eat, but I bought a couple of bags of the Roast Chicken Fridge Raiders for my granddaughters' at the weekend and they didn't eat them. I fancied something to pick at today and as I've given up chocolate for Lent this was really the only thing I had in the kitchen which would go someway to relieving my craving for something nice, I find I'm erring more towards savoury snacks at the moment so these seemed ideal.

For around 98p you get a bag containing 12 or so decent sized pieces of chicken, they look rather pale but I've learned to overlook the appearance of foods as sometimes the most horrid looking item can taste delicious. I suppose this is a rather expensive way of buying chicken, but the Fridge Raiders range is often on half price offer and then you can pick a bag up for less than 50p which makes it more reasonable. Don't be afraid to stock up when they are on special offer as I have always found these to have a good use by date which is usually a week or two later.

The chicken pieces are moist and tender, a bit too greasy for my liking although I think they have a very nice texture. You'll probably notice they feel a little bit spongy when you pick them up in your fingers but this soon disappears when you put one into your mouth and start chewing. The Fridge Raiders are made of 100% chicken breast meat and this is evident from the general texture and taste of them.

I think the flavouring is lovely, to me they don't exactly taste of roast chicken (of course) but they are very reminiscent of this flavour. The pieces haven't been roasted, it's simply a roast chicken flavouring that has been added to them but it's very tasty indeed and kept me reaching into the bag until it was empty. The chicken is beautifully seasoned, I don't like overly salty food and to be honest I was expecting these to taste very salty but they don't and I think Mattessons have blended the seasonings and spices perfectly to create a delicious and very moreish snack.

I have just looked at the nutritional information and wasn't very surprised to find that these are not terribly good for my diet. Each 65g bag contains 125 calories and a very high 7.3g of fat, this wouldn't be too bad I suppose but I could quite easily eat two bags of these in one sitting and then the calories and fat would quickly mount up.

Summary: A tasty snack which is so much more interesting than a bag of crisps.
