Advantages: The four remaining flavours taste as good as ever, sweets are long lasting and delicious.

Disadvantages: Replacing the liquorice flavour with blackcurrant was a massive mistake.

I have enjoyed Sports Mixtures since I was a child and they were exclusively produced by Lion's. Recently, it seems that the product has passed to Maynard's, who immediately and controversially removed the black liquorice flavoured gum and replaced it with a purple blackcurrant one.

Sports mixtures have a unique taste and texture; they are hard and chewy, and (currently) come in raspberry, pineapple, apricot, blackcurrant and lime flavours. It's obvious that the blackcurrant is a 'new' flavour, as it does not fit in well with the others and is a little lacklustre, having a weak, chemical blackcurrant taste. In the current incarnation, (previously having been a liquorice lover) my favourite is the raspberry, but all of the other flavours are rich and flavoursome. Despite reports to the contrary from some naysayers, I believe that the other four flavours taste the same as they always have.

Sports mixtures are a great tasting and unique sweet, and I still regularly buy them despite the unfortunate blackcurrant.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR LIQUORICE LOVERS! :

For those who are missing the old liquorice flavoured sports mixtures... Lion's original sports mixtures, NOT featuring the substandard blackcurrant variety are still available to buy online from various sellers such as the retro sweet shop http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/

Also, Lion's Liquorice Gums, which are essentially the same, are also available on sites like this, AND, I have occasionally seen them available to buy in shops.

So don't be too upset at losing them - they are still out there!

Summary: The loss of liquorice as a flavour is a shame, but the rest are still delicious!

I'm personally glad that the liquorice one has gone but good review anyway!
