Advantages: They're sweets.....

Disadvantages: Not suitable for vegetarians.

Sometimes the old ones are the best, and Maynards Wine Gums certainly come into that category. These sweets have been around for as long as I can remember, with very little in the way of modification, and that is just fine by me!

These sweets are blobs of sugar and gelatine (sorry to those veggies reading this, but you should stay away from these) coloured and flavoured with natural ingredients that bear no relation to anything you would expect - either sweet wise, or wine wise.....for example, black carrot, spinach and stinging nettle, feature on the list of vegetable extracts!

Each sweet is fashioned into a shape - round, moon, rectangular, diamond etc, so if you were wanting to create an educational excuse for eating these, you could include them in some sort of diy geometry lesson, and each has the name of an alcoholic beverage "stamped" on the top. So, for example, your wine gum might say "port", "sherry" or"bourbon". Sadly, none of these drinks actually appear in any way shape or form in these sweets, so you will have to just imagine your black carrot, spinach and stinging nettle as giving you the alcoholic buzz/kick/relaxation that you need!

There isn't really a great deal to say about these - They are chewy, so don't eat them if you hate getting chewy bits stuck in your teeth. They are tasty, but don't taste of anything in particular (unless you know what stinging nettles taste like, I suppose!) yet everyone seems to fight over the black and the red ones.....what is it about those particular colours of sweets that people get over protective about? Answers on a postcard please......

As a negative, as well as not being suitable for vegetarians due to using bovine gelatine in their ingredients, these sweets are very greasy. If you hold one in your fingers for more than a nanosecond, you will notice a greasy residue on your skin, and if you empty a pack onto a sheet of paper, you will see a greasy stain left behind......rather off putting in some respects, but I have to say this has never really stopped me from eating them.

Available in tubes containing just a few round sweets, and 215g packs that contain rather more - these are not exactly diet friendly......each sweet has 20 calories in, so just 5 sweets is 100 cals......if you are on a low cal diet, these are ones to steer clear of, unless you have the willpower of an ox.

Available in most newsagents, garage forecourt shops, and supermarkets......and often on BOGOF and multibuy in the larger stores, these are ideal for car journeys and coach trips!

Whilst I do like these, I am knocking a star off for not being suitable for vegetarians, and another star off for not actually having any definitive taste.

Summary: A most acceptable chew.
