Advantages: thick, tasty, very crunchy
Disadvantages: expensive(ish)
I've never been a crisp eater. I used to get a yen for a bag of Walker's cheese and onion about twice a year but that was it. Horrid things, crisps. Greasy, not filling, synthetic flavoured, mouth lacerators. I just didn't understand what people saw in crisps at all. And then I tried McCoys. McCoys are thicker than normal crisps, and they're ridged. I don't know what the ridging does, but the thickness makes a big difference to the crisps. They've got more potato inside them, for a start, so more of a potatoey flavour. And they seem less greasy because you've got more potato to balance it out. Also, the crisps have a very 'fresh' potatoey flavour. They make more of a crunch too, but not in the way that strips the skin off the roof of your mouth like some other varieties. All in all, McCoys are a far more substantial crisp than other varieties. Each one gives your mouth something to go at, so you feel afterwards as if you've really eaten something with some bulk. You also feel more full because you get more McCoys in your bag. A bag of Walker's crisps, for instance, contains 34.5 grammes of crisps, whereas you get a good 50 grammes in McCoys. McCoys come in several flavours, including salted, salt and vinegar, cheddar and onion, flame grilled steak and spicy chilli. I can only comment on the plain and the salt and vinegar because I find all other flavours of any crisp disgusting, but on the two counts I can comment upon McCoys beat Walker's hands down. Firstly, the plain. You can definitely taste the salt in McCoys, but it's more subtle than Walker's which I find to taste drowned in salt. Secondly, the salt and vinegar, and again the McCoys have a slightly more subtle flavour but are still very tasty. Quality-wise, I've never had a bad bag of McCoys, whereas with other crisps I've tried over the years I've found the qual
ity to vary enormously from one batch to the next. I've had something of an addiction to McCoys for a few months now and I've never come across one green crisp! A single bag of McCoys costs 40p, so they're not the cheapest around. But what you get for your money is a quality, consistent product that's larger than most others and tastes very fresh and potatoey. Just in case anyone's really interested, they come in a nice shiny gold foil bag. If Yorkie is a man's chocolate, then McCoys are a man's crisp. As a woman, I consider it my duty to eat a bag a day in the interests of gender equality.
