Advantages: Delicious taste, soft sponge, rich cream filling and creamy milk chocolate, good price.
Disadvantages: High in fat.
When my Mum returned from a recent 'spree' in our local Poundland I was very pleased to see that she'd picked up some chocolate (never turn down a freebie me!).
There are 10 penguin mini rolls for £1.00 in our local Poundland and I'm not sure if you can purchase these anywhere else as I don't recall seeing them. Inside the celophane wrapping there is two plastic trays each holding five penguin mini rolls. They are wrapped in lots of different, vibrant colours. There is a picture of a penguin (what else!) on the front of the packaging and the wrapper shows the usual best before end, nutritional information, ingredients etc as well as having a joke on it. This one says 'Where do Penguins keep their money?' 'In a snow bank'. Rubbish I know!
The penguin mini roll is a chocolate sponge with a chocolate cream filling which is then rolled up so there is a couple of layers of sponge and chocolate cream and then the whole thing is covered with a milk chocolate layer. Basically this bar is just one giant piece of chocolate flavoured yumminess! The sponge is delicious soft and not too dry. The chocolate cream filling is rich and chocolatey and the milk chocolate layer just sets the whole thing off perfectly. I have eaten two of these now (they all seem to have bad jokes!) and although I can vaguely taste a penuin I wouldn't say that these were anything like a penguin bar. The penguin bar is hard and crunchy and just thinking about it is making me want one!
There is 146 calories & 8.8g of fat per 29g bar so these should be enjoyed in moderation. Because these bars are individually wrapped they are the ideal size for a lunchbox or packed lunch and I sent my fiance off to work with a couple this morning as he's got a long shift and will want a couple of snacks throughout the day.
These mini rolls are perfectly nice but they really aren't that much like a Penguin bar, for this reason I am going to rate it 4/5.
Summary: A delicious mini roll that doesn't remind me much of a Penguin!
