Suckered by Tesco again. Cheekily nipped into town using Tescos free car park to avoid the N.C.P.s ridiculous charges. Appeased my guilty conscience by nipping into the store for a pint of milk and succumbed to the temptation of buy one get one free cakes. At £1.09 for two it seemed rather churlish not to. The cakes in question were a Jamaican Ginger Cake and a Lyons Golden Syrup cake. Both of these were childhood staples. If ever mum had someone pop in for a cuppa she'd whip one of theses out of the pantry to go with it. I tend not to buy cakes as my other half has a waistline considerably larger than that of his trouser waistband despite all protestations ... Read the complete review

Any regular readers of my reviews will be aware by now that I have a horrendous sweet tooth and am a huge lover of biscuits, cakes and sweeties. It was whilst I was doing a little 'top-up' shopping in my local Lidl supermarket that I spotted the McVitie's golden syrup cake, which was on offer at only 50p. Having not tried this cake for a few years but remembering that I used to really adore the rich taste, I immediately decided to take advantage of the low price and give it another go. Removing the dark green coloured outer wrapper and taking the cake out, I was impressed immediately by the rich colour of the cake. A dark, golden brown coloured ... Read the complete review

When I was younger, I used to love it when we had golden syrup in the house. We only ever used it if baking a special cake or something, and I would always find delights in licking the spoon free of its sticky substance at the end. Now, you're very unlikely to find golden syrup in my house as baking is not something I do a lot. I wasn't exactly going to buy a jar of golden syrup simply to lick the spoon, so where I discovered the Golden Syrup Cake, I couldn't wait to try it. Brand: McVities Packaging: Green packet Appearance: golden brown Taste: syrup Texture: sticky Price: £1 Availability: Most good supermarkets and ... Read the complete review

Both my other half and I have very sweet teeth, and love to treat ourselves to a pudding for one meal a week in our weekly food shop. Currently, Somerfield have Golden Syrup Cakes at half price, and so into the basket it went! I first tried the cake a number of months ago when it was half price at Tesco, and loved it, so now pick it up pretty much whenever it comes on offer - which shows that offers work, I guess! So, the cake. It's a very soft, very sticky and very moist bar. Get a sharp knife and cut into the required amount of pieces - I have to be honest, as this cake is quite light to eat (despite how sweet it is), my other half and I can happily polish ... I am having a little trip to Morrisons this afternoon and I am fairly sure that one of the McVities Golden Syrup cakes may well slip into my shopping trolley. I cant think of a reason why but every food that I enjoy is packed with a zillion calories. The packaging is unmistakeable, the cake has a plastic cover that is in shades of racing green and gold, very elegant and sophisticated. Inside of the heat sealed plastic packet the cake is in a white paper wrapper. This is where the whole isssue becomes very interesting, as you cut a slice of syrup cake the soft moist cake clings for dear life to the paper wrapper, so as you put the slice on your plate your ...
