Advantages: digestive biscuit itself is good and crumbly

Disadvantages: weird chewy texture, caramel leaks, fattening!

I decided to try these for the first time because they were on special (buy one get one free across the whole McVities digestives range). I got the yogurt ones too so look out for a review of those in the future.

I returned home from Sainsbury's with my yummy loot and made a cup of coffee...perfect for dipping, I thought. I imagined them to be a bit like Dutch caramel waffle biscuits (Stroopwafel or something along those lines!) and thought the caramel would go all melty and delicious.

I opened the packet and was...well...a bit disappointed. There's nothing wrong with the biscuity part - it's your standard McVities digestive, fairly crumbly and with a vaguely malty taste. Just the right amount of saltiness to balance out the sweetness.

But as for the caramel coating? Well...I just wasn't really convinced. There's not very much of the caramel, and it has the effect of making the biscuit itself strangely chewy. Who wants to eat a chewy digestive?? They're supposed to be crumbly! :( Also, my idea of dipping them didn't work too well...the caramel takes a long time to get really runny and delicious, and by the time that's happened chunks of the biscuit are doing that annoying thing where they fall off, swim in your coffee and then you end up choking on nasty lumps when you get to the bottom of the cup. Blechh!!

Also, I noticed that parts of the caramel had escaped from their chocolate covering and glued some of the biscuits together (and also glued them to the packaging). When I tried to pull them apart the caramel proved quite tenacious and I ended up pulling the biscuits into pieces by accident.

I also had a look at the nutritional information on the back of these and promptly wished I hadn't - each single biscuit contains a whopping 81 calories and a large amount of fat to boot. 81 calories really is quite a lot for one biscuit - you can have a KitKat for 107 and a KitKat feels like more of a treat than a weirdly chewy caramel biscuit does.

On the whole I wasn't too impressed by these. They weren't yummy enough to justify the nutritional punch they pack and I am just not convinced by their chewiness. Here's hoping that the yogurt ones will be better :)

Summary: Unconvincing.
