Advantages: Nice biscuit but the caramel layer can be annoying
Disadvantages: The caramel layer stays put!
McVities have tried to offer the best of both worlds with this innovative recipe. McVities chocolate digestives are a firm favourite in our household and we both like caramel so it made perfect sense to buy the McVities caramel biscuits and kill two birds with one stone.
I rather like the wrapper design, it is springlike and colourful and often the packaging can either make or break the product.
The McVities Caramel biscuit is maginally smaller the ordinary chocolate digestives, so the packet feels slightly less bulky. The background colours are the same blue and brown that appear on McVities chocolate digestives. Then right across the front of the packet runs a wide sunshine yellow flash. The McVities logo sits at the top of the yellow flash and the word `Caramels` is printed on the packet in quirky light brown lettering.
As with most quality biscuits there is a little tab at the top of the packet which allows for easy opening.
Pull the tab and expose the Caramel biscuits, take one out of the packet and you may notice that the top couple are slightly battered around the edges, presumably done in transit.
At first sight the biscuit looks a dead ringer for the McVities chocolate digestives. The top of the biscuit has the makers name imprinted onto the surface, the same little `holes` are also there. Turn the biscuit over and even the chocolate has that pleasant uniform ripple effect.
As you bite into the Caramel biscuit you soon spot the difference. Tucked in between the digestive biscuit and the lavish layer of milk chocolate is a layer of caramel. The caramel is firm but not too chewy and tastes creamy and sweet.
Now, this is where my problem started. When I bit into the biscuit the layer of caramel stayed firmly in its place, the digestive biscuit started to crumble away from the caramel and the chocolate made a desperate bid for freedom. Hence I had a mixture of digestive biscuit and chocolate in my mouth but the caramel layer was still attached to the biscuit which was in my hand.
So, a problem! As I carried on with my investigations I realised that you had to bite firmly into the biscuit, taking in the three layers at in one bite.
If you didn't do that then it was hard to overcome the `caramel problem`.
Most of us love a good dunk, my humble apologies to McVities but these biscuits ain't made for dunking!...unless of course you enjoy a cup full of melted caramel.
I am a sucker for trying any new brand of biscuit, after all someone has to do it! But although in theory the biscuit is great in practise I found that the caramel layer was more of a hindrance than a help.
A 300g packet costs in the region of £1.30.
The product contains no hydrogenated vegetable oil and is suitable for Vegetarians. the biscuits do contain soya, milk and gluten.
Each biscuit contains 80 calories and are high in fats and sugars.
Would I pick up another packet on my travels?
Maybe not, I think I will stick with what I know and buy the ordinary chocolate digestives.
Summary: A good quality biscuit, but not for me.

- 31/01/09 one of my pet hates, why do companies keep trying to com up with new varieties of tried and tested favourites - if I want caramel I'll go elsewhere, for choccy digestives I'll stick with big McVs -
nice one! |
