Advantages: Sweet, smooth and delicious, good quality, some good offers
Disadvantages: A tad more expencive and perhaps a bit too chewy
I'm a huge fan of McVities original chocolate digestives, and was very happy when their caramel version came out. There's something about digestive biscuits and chocolate, that when made by McVities, are extremely moreish!
McVities have been producing snacks and biscuits for over 100 years, so they've got plenty of knowledge and experience of what constitutes great flavours and ingredients. I'd say that I have a lot of trust in them as a company and similar products by cheaper or alternative brands just don't meet the same standard.
They come under the umbrella of United Biscuits who seem to be making a concerted effort in improving the quality of the ingredients they use in production. For example by removing artificial colours, using wholegrains and removing hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Chocolate Digestives were first introduced way back in 1925 and have become extremely popular. In 2004, McVities Dunk For Britain campaign won the award of 'Nation's favourite' dunking biscuit. The caramel variety was released in 1999, although maintains the great taste of the original, is quite different in texture.
The Caramel Digestives quite simply just have a layer of caramel on top of the biscuit base, adding a bit more flavour. They're readily available in most supermarkets and have been on offer quite a lot lately along with the original digestive. A 300g packet costs around £1.30 (Tesco) and they work out a more expensive in comparison to the originals as they seem to be slightly smaller and sold in smaller packets also (originals are 400g).
Each biscuit contains 3.7g fat and 81 calories, which is slightly less than the original choc digestive though I think they're ever so slightly smaller. That said, you get plenty of caramel to make up for it. The biscuit is crunchy and the chocolate is smooth and delicious as expected. The caramel is quite thick and although it's smooth, it's quite chewy. I've put them to the dunkability test and they're pretty good with a cuppa tea!
Overall, I think these have a lovely taste and the chewy texture means you can eat them slowly and really enjoy them. If you want something a bit different to the average digestive then these make a lovely sweet treat. I wouldn't say they're quite as moreish as the originals, but I count that as a good thing as it makes it easier to just have one or two of these rather than the whole packet. I'm giving them a 4 because although they're very nice, I think they'd be slightly better if the caramel was less chewy. Although they make be a tad more expensive, the offers can be a good time to stock up on them. I've tried similar products from other brands but McVities takes the biscuit everytime :o)
Summary: Recommended if you're a fan of digestives and yummy caramel
