Advantages: They taste yummy, a delicious twist on the old classic Chocolate Digestives, good dunkability

Disadvantages: All those calories and all that fat!

I first tried McVities Chocolate Caramel Digestives a couple of years ago when they first came out. I thought they were nice but, not really being a biscuit person, I never thought to buy another packet. Today, however, I was standing in the corner shop and noticed a basket of biscuits on promotion so picked up a couple of packets.

It wasn't until I got them home that I realised they weren't the 'normal' McVities Digestives, but the long ago sampled Caramel variety. Oh well, 2 packets for £1 - priced up at £1.19 each and well in date! Can't moan even if I was hoping for a caramel-less biscuit!

These biscuits are, for me, the perfect size. They're smaller than the plain Digestives, which are too big to dunk unless you break them in half. I HATE biscuit crumbs so having to break a biscuit before it will fit into a cup of coffee is just too messy. You've guessed it, I'm a dunker.

If you're a dunker these biscuits are fabulous. Leave them in the hot coffee for a few seconds and the chocolate will melt to a consistency that makes you lick your lips for 10 minutes after eating it. The biscuit goes soft, but not soggy. It stays vaguely crunchy and soaks up the flavour of the coffee, with the savoury/sweet Digestive biscuit being the perfect partner for the sugary milk chocolate.

It's the caramel that transforms the biscuit. It's the same kind of taste as the caramel used on a Mars bar, only more concentrated. The caramel is only a very thin layer but it's such a strong taste that you can't help but savour and enjoy it. It's not overly sugary (a good thing as far as I'm concerned!) and has a 'real' caramel kinda flavour, as opposed to the more synthetic tasting caramel in a Twix or Galaxy Caramel. I love the way it binds the biscuit together when I've dunked it, so far tonight I've dunked five and haven't had a biscuit drop off into my cup of Kenco yet! Bonus!

I've eaten a couple un-dunked too and they really are delicious. The biscuit has the original McVities Digestive taste; buttery and sweet with a nice crunch as I sink my teeth into it. The chocolate is quite rich for milk chocolate used on a biscuit, and of much better quality than the Sainsbury's Chocolate Digestives that my kids' like. Again, it's the addition of the caramel which I think makes this biscuit. A standard Chocolate Digestive I can take or leave, but this caramel one... I keep going back to the biscuit tin which is so unheard of for me that even Mark has commented about it!

81 cals and 3.7g fat. I've just spotted it on the wrapper. Blimey, I could have had a Chinese for all the 'nutrition' I've just munched. I should have guessed they'd be heavy on the cals as I'm always aware of a greasy taste when I eat any kind of Digestive. I don't mean they have a greasy texture as they're actually perfect biscuit consistency, but there's always a definite *taste* of grease. This is masked in this Caramel Digestive by the sweetness of the caramel, but all.that.fat!!! Hmph, looks like I'll be having salad for tea tomorrow.

Everyone in the house likes them actually, which is a minor miracle in itself, but would I buy them again? Well, put it like this; as someone who never, ever buys biscuits I might remember to look out for them in Tesco. Or I might not even think about them again for another 2 years. I won't need to anyway as judging by the way Mark and the girls' kept rushing over to the biscuit tin (and the fact that the two packs have already been eaten!) I reckon they'll remember.

Summary: If you like a McVities Chocolate Digestive, you'll love these!

Perhaps you need bigger mugs for biscuits.
