Advantages: Its a chocolate biscuit - what more do you need!

Disadvantages: Doesn't increase metabolism in any way.......

I don't often buy biscuits, simply because they don't last very long in this house, together with the fact that my grocery budget doesn't usually extend to such fripperies!

However, a friend found herself drowning in such yummy things over the Christmas period and, obviously feeling sorry for us, made a "Red Cross" style parcel of treats!

So this morning we have happily been sampling a tub of McVities Milk Chocolate digestives with a cuppa.......

This tub is about six inches in height, with a peel off sealed paper top, and a blue plastic lid, to keep your biscuits fresh if you are disciplined enough not to eat them all in one sitting. The tub also stands upright so there is no danger of any broken or crumbly bits making an escape onto the sofa or the floor.

The tub contains 250g of chocolate biscuits, (about a couple of dozen) and has a picture on the front of a yummy biscuit, so there is no doubt what you are buying!

The tub also makes it clear on the front that there are no artificial colours or flavours, and no hydrogenated vegetable oils used. If you want to look at the healthy stuff, it also tells you that it contains 45% wheat and wholemeal goodness, although I am sure that this is more than offset by the fact that you are eating chocolate, and sugar as well! This is never going to be a health food!

These chocolate digestives have not suffered from the trend over the last few years to make things smaller - each biscuit is still a good size. The layer of milk chocolate (29% according to the ingredients list) is substantial enough to make sure that you know that you are enjoying a chocolate biscuit rather than just any old biscuit, and the biscuit did not crumble as it was eaten, so there was no need to hold one hand under the biscuit as I brought it to my mouth with the other hand!

My husband decided to do the "dunking into a cup of tea" test and was quite impressed at the dunkability - he said that it would have needed rather a lot of time in his tea before there was any danger of losing half the biscuit to the bottom of the mug, and that the meltability of the chocolate coating was just right - it went nicely soft without becoming "eeewww"! This is obviously a very technical test, and you cannot underestimate the seriousness of it..........!

One gripe that I had was that it is difficult to get an individual biscuit out of the tub without tipping it over, which can result in an avalanche of unnecessary biscuits.......but I suppose that is a reasonable excuse to eat more than just the one "oh they fell into my hand........"

During the summer I would keep these in the fridge - in my opinion chocolate always tastes better when it is cold, and chocolate biscuits are no exception, but as it is January as I type this, it is perfectly cool enough right now......

Now, as I mentioned above, these are never going to be a health food - and at 84 cals per biscuit and 2.1grammes of saturated fat, the should be enjoyed in moderation, unless you fancy running a mile to offset the calorie intake of one biscuit.......nah, didn't think so!

Thankfully, I ran 10 miles this morning, so have been able to review these biscuits guilt-free.........pass over the tub!

Summary: Put the kettle on and get dunking!
