Advantages: Tops for texture and taste

Disadvantages: 5% Fat but irresistable

Digestive biscuits, in particular McVitie's Digestive, are my first choice in plain biscuits; I have enjoyed them all my life: when I was a boy my mother used to set me down with a couple of digestives and a glass of milk and I grew up big and strong! In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, you will just have accept that as fact! Now that I'm a man they are just as great; the more I eat the bigger I get!!! It's probably the 21.5 grams content, though that's per 400 gram packet, just over 5% which is not bad in biscuit terms.
They can be enjoyed just with nothing on (the biscuit that is!), or with a little butter and even with some cheese, preferably a hard cheese like cheddar. Some like to dunk them in their tea but that's not my scene, I want to savour them in all their unadulterated crisp original state and be able to appreciate their texture that is a result of the main ingredient, namely wheat flour. I think that's where the main flavour and texture comes from, i.e. the wheat flour.
I have often wondered where the name digestive came from or how it was arrived so I did a bit of research. Research, sounds like I did something, really means I googled it! And it seems that, years ago, they were advertised as aiding digestion; this has subsequently been debunked as not true. It's even rumoured that it is illegal in some jurisdictions to sell them under the Digestive name. They do go way back, being first made by McVitie's in Edinburgh in 1892. Still in demand to this day, they are the ninth biggest selling biscuit in the UK.
Get yourself a packet today, tear back that little strip to open (I love that bit, it's the anticipation!) and enjoy with whatever you like, even jam!!! Never tried them with jam, I think that's an American thing so maybe I'll give that a miss.

Summary: Great for snacking, go with everhting!
