Advantages: Good quality cakes that are fairly firm but smooth chocolate and a rich, thick layer of caramel
Disadvantages: None as such
I'm not normally a huge fan of sponge cakes, but I do love Galaxy chocolate so these make their way into the shopping trolly every now and again.
Galaxy makes these cake bars (which are baked by McVities) and so you expect good quality and their luscious creamy chocolate, which you do get.
These are sold in a multipack of 5 and can be found in the bakery section of most supermarkets and many convenience stores as they're quite popular. At around £1.35 (Tesco) there are cheaper alternatives available, but these are good quality and very tasty. They're also often on offer, such as two for £2.30, in case you want to stock up on a few as they seem to go quite quickly when you live with fellow sweet-toothed people.
The packaging has 'Galaxy' on the front with a brown design to reflect yummy chocolate, plus a picture of the cake so you know what to expect. The packaging also notes that no hydrogenated vegetable oil is used, which is always good to know.
Each cake is individually wrapped so they're good for lunch boxes or taking out with you, and they sit inside a cardboard tray to prevent too much damage to them before you get your goodies home.
These are described as 'delicious chocolate sponge cakes with chocolate cream and covered in smooth creamy Galaxy milk chocolate'. Sounds very tempting! For this chocolate goodness, each cake will set you back 163 calories and 9.3g fat, so whilst they're not the healthiest of snacks, they're not the worst either, and worth it for the rich, sweet taste.
The chocolate covering is smooth, with a rippled effect on top, and is fairly delicate when you bite into it. The sponge is soft and almost melts in your mouth, which compliments the reasonably thick layer of chocolate cream on top.
The overall texture is smooth and creamy, but also quite light so they're not too filling. The chocolate is rich and delicious, as you'd expect from Galaxy, and it's sweet without being sickly.
I can't quite put my finger on why, but I think I prefer the Cadbury's Caramel cake bars. Perhaps it's because the Cadbury's ones seem generally slightly softer in terms of texture, and so they're a bit more melt-in-your-mouth.
Each cake is a seems to be just the right size; whilst they may not be enough to satisfy a big appetite, they're enough to satisfy a chocolately craving and indulge yourself in for a minute or two.
Summary: A good all-rounder as there's not much to dislike about these, especially if you're a caramel fan :)
