Advantages: Good chocolate
Disadvantages: Small pack size
Hobnobs Original were a big success when launched and remain popular today so McVities decided to capitalise on that and introduce a new alternative and what should that be but a milk chocolate coating. Some of the best biscuits have alternative chocolate varieties thinking of Rich Tea and Digestives.
Whilst the original Hobnobs have bright orange packaging the chocolate version has blue packaging. You can either get them in the traditional wrapper or you can buy them in the fancy tub with the lid but you pay extra for this of course.
My packet is bright blue and navy in part. The words Hobnob is written in big white writing and there is a picture of the biscuit on the front to entice you.
Interestingly these cost about a third more than the regular Hobnobs and you get a third less in the pack. This sounds quite harsh but may well have something to do with the fact that once they contain chccolate they are classed as VAT-applicable.
The biscuit is as always delicious. It tastes really oaty and wholesome and they are a good biscuit if you are looking for someting as a mid-morning snack. The biscuit looks very rough and golden and you will get crumbs all over the floor but as a recent advertising campaign said (not for these I think but it's the same idea) crumbs are a sign of a good biscuit. I love the golden rich colour of these and always think they look really rustic. These are also great for dunking in drinks like tea or milk because they don't fall to pieces.
The chcolate in these impresses me. Although it's not made by a chocolate company the standard is quite high and it is smooth and creamy and complements the biscuit well. Sometimes I feel there may just be a bit to much chocolate compared to biscuit but this is a minor niggle and it does deal with the problem I have with the regular ones of dryness because the chocolate coating really makes it more moist.
So yes I do enjoy these although the calories shoot up to 92 calories each so I can't have too many. I think I'll just have these from time to time and stick with the original for now...
Summary: A nice alternative to the original
