I popped into my local grocers at lunchtime with my daughter to get some bread for lunch and right alongside the bread I spied a McVities Jamaica Ginger Cake. I hadn't seen one of those for years. My mum used to buy these for us when we were kids. My daughter managed to persuade me to buy one, although she didn't exactly have to twist my arm very hard! The cake is baked in a paper case and sealed in a brown plastic bag. On first opening the cake you can almost taste the ginger the aroma is so overpowering, although very, very pleasant and definitely inviting. A dark brown, moist, sticky cake, which is easily cut into slices, although I did find pealing the ... Read the complete review

Yummy scrummy gingery Jamaica Ginger Cake was one of my mothers store cupboard staples. She was convinced that failure to whip out a cake for an unexpected guest to go with their cuppa confirmed her status as woman who should have had it all but didn't. In an era where working mums were the thing of playground gossip and an au pair was a symbol of your failure of motherhood the disasters of the world could be rectified with a little domestic stability and that stability was to be found within the cake tin reserved for visitors and visitors only. Still its one way of making a child look forward to the unexpected visit of the aunt who smelt of mothballs with ... Read the complete review

I read a review of this last week and 'lo and behold' when I went into Sainsburys, it was on offer for just 54p. Now this isn't normally something I'd go for but I've been getting bored with the same old things lately so I went for it. I love ginger and considering this was Mcvities, I was expecting it to be good. The cake came inside a wrapper but on top of this I had to peel back the paper that was around the bottom of the whole thing. I lost a small amount of cake in this process but that gave me a reason to get a knife out and secretly scrape the bits and consume these whilst no one was looking. The cake had a lovely smell to it which ... Read the complete review

McVities Jamaica Ginger Cake..... McVities have been making and selling this Jamaica Ginger cake for as long as I can remember and it is something that I pretty much grew up with. Mum used to get it for the family to have as a treat with a nice cup of tea(or milkshake in my case) to have at elevenses. I still occasionally buy the cake and it is the same now as I remember it being when I was little although it does seem to have shrunk in size somewhat! At the moment Tesco's are selling these McVities cakes for 2 for £1.50 pence. This is an okay offer if indeed you plan to eat two! I did buy the offer but thinking of it I really ... This has to be one of my favourite shop-bought cakes of all time. I came across one today, after not seeing one for around two years. After school in tesco's with my mum and brothers and trailing around the bread and bakery section this little beauty caught my eye. At first i looked straight past it, but then my eyes took a second look and after much persuasion i was allowed to put it in the trolley! RESULT! PACKAGING The packaging in my opinion is very traditional looking. It is a brownish, cuboid shaped package with a blue top, and pictures of palm trees on the brown part. Written on the main part of the package is THE ORIGINAL JAMAICA GINGER ... Read the complete review
