... The cake doesn't start to melt, and feels very stodgy, not moist at all. It is also very buttery, over powering the lemon. The texture is also the same, with hardly any zest to brighten the cake up. It's also very greasy, getting all over your hands. In conclusion, a cake that fails to deliver. It's not up to the usual quality provided by McVities, and the taste is poor. It's stodgy in the mouth, with butter dominating the experience. A massive disappointment....more

McVitie's make some of the best products available, that usually taste great and are high in quality. However, this is a little bit of a let down, with lower quality than I would usually expect from the brand. It also lets down in the taste and texture department, but it does look delicious and is very good value for money, feeding lots of people for a low price. The packaging is very simple, easy to read and the branding makes it easy to recognise on the shelf. The text is bold and crisp making it easy to read. Whilst walking round my local Somerfield last night looking for a cake I saw they had McVities Lemon Cakes on buy 2 for £2. I'm quite partial to lemon cakes so I decided to try them. I had a feeling they might be good as they also make the Jamaica Ginger cake which I love so I thought I would buy them for a change. McVities are part of the massive group of companies owned by United Biscuits and the cakes are made in a factory in Yorkshire which employs over 1000 people. On arriving back home I put on the kettle and was soon settling down with the family to enjoy a cup of Earl Grey and a slice of lemon cake- courtesy of McVities. I ...  Read the complete review
