I've seen loads of reviews on these lately, and seeing as I've eaten them myself I might as well jump on the bandwagon and throw in my own thoughts . You've probably seen them in your local shop, or at least seen the advert where the unfortunate Japanese lady reaches for a Mikado stick and accidentally ends up photocopying her posterior.
Mikado are obviously going for a very Japanese style with these sticks , which are essentially a rip-off of the very popular Japanese snack, Pocky. They are exactly the same, thin biscuit sticks dipped in chocolate, with the bottom couple of centimetres left bare so that you can grip them easily withut getting your hands mucky .
The chocolate itself is very thin, and also very low quality - overly sweet with a fatty taste to it . It doesn't seem to have a very good cocoa content at all, and tastes awfully cheap and nasty. The biscuit itself is thin, and quite crunchy . It doesn't have an awful lot of flavour of its own, in fact, the only thing I can really say about the biscuit part as regards flavour is that it's slightly sweet.
Each biscuit contains only 11 calories, 0.5g of fat and 0.8g of sugar . That really isn't that bad - but these sticks are thin and not very satisfying . You will end up eating the whole packet and still not really feeling you've had a treat, not just because you don't feel full, but because of the dreadful quality of the product in general .
These cost £1.20 for a 75 g box . That is hideously expensive, especially for something that tastes of - well, not a lot really . For the same price as this, I could treat myself to a lovely sinful cream cake, or two filling snickers bars (with change left over). Neither of these options would be particularly healthy, but I would at least feel filled up and feel like I'd had a treat at the same time .
Personally, I think these are rubbish . The taste is awful, they taste cheap but cost a bomb, they don't fill you up, and the idea was a complete rip off of Pocky .(If you do have a local Japanese (or even Chinese) supermarket, do go and buy some Pocky and give them a try, they cost about 70p and taste ace, and come in all sorts of flavours!)
If you're going to rip-off another product, you should be able to do it well. Mikado is an utter failure as a snack, and so, from me, it gets the lowest rating I can give - 1 star .

- 28/09/09 I'll be sticking with my Pocky then, I had a feeling the highly advertised Mikado's wouldn't be any good. |
