Advantages: Low Fat yummy snack

Disadvantages: Prone to breaking

I must admit that mini Babybel lights are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I became a fan when I was following the Slimming World diet, and thought I would try these as you could have 3 of these little cheeses as one of your healthy options. As a cheese addict, this seemed like a lot of cheese for my precious calories!!

Okay so my love of Babybel has lasted far longer than the diet did, but since then they are a staple for my fridge!! Like original Babybel, they are mini cheese encased in red wax, made by Fromageries Bel in France. They are 100% natural cheese, and have a mild creamy flavour. They are not on par with a chunk of mature cheddar, and are probably only a couple of steps along the food chain from the processed cheese slice, but they are great as a snack.

At 40 calories a cheese they won't break the diet. Each cheese also contains 5 grams of protein, 2.4g of fat (1.6g saturates) 144mg sodium and 170mg of Calcium. This equates to just over 21% of your daily recommended allowance of calcium, which was great for me when I was feeding my little man as I hate milk and was worried about my bones. They are also easy to eat on the go, so became my favourite new mum snack!!!

As well as eating them whole I used them in snacks - 2 of my favourites was in a babybel and ham pitta - nuked for a minute in the microwave, and mini pizzas made with a pitta spread thinly with tomato puree, a ripped up piece of ham, and sliced babybel, grilled until the edges brown and cheese melts - Yummy!!!

The only downside for me is sometimes when you open them the cheese breaks, and then you have to wrestle them out of the wax casing!!

Mini Babybel light are available in 6 and 12 packs in most supermarkets. At the moment the six pack is buy one get one free at Tesco, priced at £1.58

Summary: Mighty Little Cheese
