In reality it probably wasn't a nice thing to do, but in a slightly more sensible reality if I had tried to eat the food I would have regurgitated it all over the table. Mongolian food is as eclectic as the people, however as Western companies move in, its popularity is certainly dwindling. At least once a day I was given a bowl of beef, which was essentially 10% beef and 90% fat. The thought made me sick. I had to, without fail, after every meal wait until the very end. Mainly because I've been asked so much about the food in Mongolia and also because Mongolian cuisine is often misunderstood (if food can be), I've written an overview of the unique traditional Mongolian diet. This overview is based upon personal experience. There are, no doubt, slight regional variations (I travelled capital city, Ulaanbaatar [UB] and Western aimag/district, Hovd). I haven't included the availabilty of foreign foods at supermarkets and restaurants; they are limited to UB and due to price are mainly restricted to foreigners and the wealthy.
