Advantages: Fresh tasting, the icing sugar makes a lovely difference from granulated, lovely tangy jam

Disadvantages: I imagine they are disgustingly high in calories!

Whichever of the main supermarkets I happen to be shopping in, I always buy a packet of their fresh filled donuts when I know my granddaughters' are coming or if I'm expecting visitors. I've never really had a particular favourite as one donut is very much like another in my opinion, but recently I tried a Morrisons fresh raspberry donut and have to say they are easily the best of the lot.

Morrisons use icing sugar on their plump and wonderfully browned donuts, this makes them feel nice and sticky while not being quite so sickly sweet as the fine granulated sugar the other supermarkets use.

The texture of the donut itself is perfect, and this is coming from me as a non-donut lover. They are slightly fluffier than other supermarket donuts and while still retaining the trademark heaviness of a donut, these ones are not such a stodgy struggle to get through as the donuts from Tesco I bought last weekend.

There is a generous portion of raspberry jam in each donut which tastes deliciously fruity; slightly tart yet sugary enough to liven up the blander batter of the donut. Not that the batter is particularly bland that is, it just tastes donutty - which is a gorgeous mixture of sweet, savoury, greasy and a delicious almost-burned flavour.

I think these donuts are wonderful, absolutely delicious. They aren't overly sweet and feel like a real treat, although they are rather sweet and sickly so I don't eat them very often - having said that my granddaughters' can easily eat three of them if they think they can get away with it so perhaps it's my older constitution that struggles with the absolute sugar overload of these (or any) fresh donuts.

All the donuts I've bought from Morrisons have been perfectly fresh, every now and then you'll get there just in time to buy the still-warm donuts and then they are a real treat if you can get them home while the jam is still warm. I've never bought donuts that have tasted stale or being of poor quality in any other way.

The one thing you do have to remember is that because this is a fresh product it has a short life, I find that by the following day the donuts are starting to go stale and the day after that they are inedible. For that reason I am glad the donuts are available in packs of both five or two - when my granddaughters' are visiting I buy the five but the double packs are ideal for me.

The donuts are cheaper than my next favourite brand (Sainsbury's Jam Ball Donuts) at just 59p for five, while the two pack is around 31p - a very good price indeed for such a tasty weekend treat!

Summary: Quite simply the best in-store donuts from any of the major supermarkets.
