Advantages: Quick and easy to cook

Faggots are meat balls made from pig heart, liver and bacon so they do contain a lot of offal, not a good meal for Gout sufferers I'm afraid, but I do love them myself.

I have always known faggots as Savoury Ducks because my mother used to buy them from Carlisle market every Saturday morning for our tea that day.

She used to make thick onion gravy with tin tomatoes added and bake the Ducks in it for about an hour. I can still smell her cooking now it was so mouth watering.

Alas I can never find fresh Savoury Ducks now so I buy the Brains Faggots from Tesco, they were on offer for 99p a few weeks ago so I picked up a couple of packs because they come frozen and can stay in the freezer for weeks.

They are delicious served with chips and peas and of course they can also be eaten with just a portion of peas if you only need a quick meal.

They can be cooked from frozen and it is so quick and easy, you just loosen the cardboard lid of the tin foil dish by peeling back the square dishes rim and hey presto pop in the oven at 190 degrees for half an hour.
I usually check them after twenty minutes and give the gravy a little stir and baste it over the faggots to keep them nice and moist.

I quite often make Yorkshire pudding and have the faggots in them with peas on the side but of course I still hanker for my Mums Tomato gravy so I usually have a dollop of tomato sauce with them.

I can hear some of you groaning at that one but don't knock it until you have tried it, it really does bring the taste of the faggots out.

I give these Brains faggots eight out of ten, I do think that they are excellent value for money, easy to cook, taste good, but they are not as nice as the fresh Savoury Duck cooked by my Mum
