Advantages: tasty & easy to prepare

Disadvantages: gravy a bit thin for me, not the healthiest food around

I was so cold today whilst out shopping today & really fancied something comforting, tasty, warming & filling to eat but couldn't decide what to buy.

I'd picked up Iceland's free magazine with lots of coupons & decided to have a flick through it whilst in a long queue at Qualitysave. There was a 50p voucher off Mr Brain's 6 faggot pack & it got me thinking that might be just the job.

I nipped back into Iceland & whilst looking for them I saw boxes of 4 half price - 62p as they are 'end of line'. When I went to the till the cashier swiped my Bonus card, gave me a free scratch card & asked if I wanted to use the 50p off coupon I forgot I still had in my hand - so I got the box for 24p!

There are no reasons why we don't eat much pork in our house, it's just that I rarely think of buying it, so these faggots came as a welcome change served with mashed poatoes & fresh cabbage - a good old British meal which was very tasty.

The box is as shown in the photo & inside there's a foil dish with a lid - just like a takeaway box. The cooking instructions are clearly marked on the reverse - I actually didn't have to go & find my specs to read them. There's a choice of microwaving or oven-baking - I chose the oven method as, although I don't buy much in the way of readymeals, I've always found the taste better when cooked this way.

They took 35 minutes to cook which gave me time to peel & cook the spuds & cabbage - the end result was delicious but not particularly healthy if you are watching your weight.

This box of 4 weighs 378g & each half the box ( 2 faggots) contains 247 calories, & 10.2g of fat - but it was worth it for the taste!

All the ingredients plus extra nutritional information is provided on the box.

There's quite a lot of gravy, sorry I mean 'rich west country sauce' which was a bit thin to my liking but very tasty.
The texture of the faggots is rather like big meatballs though not as solid & they tended to break up when served so I'll use a proper serving spoon next time instead of a tablespoon.

The taste is lovely - when they're cooking you smell a tasty stuffing but when you come to taste them this isn't too strong so you can still taste the meat.

I notice from the ingredients that there is sage & onion included so for those who don't like stuffing these may not be for you.

Mr Brain's Pork Faggots are also available in boxes of 2 & 6 which will cater for a single person, couple or family & I'd recommend them as a product to keep in the freezer for cold days like today!
